Goldfish Babies

Day 4 Update. When I woke up this morning, I was going to (gently) pour out the old water and give the eggs fresh water from the tank. Then take my time removing whatever cloudy white eggs had gone bad.

OMG.. I nearly dropped the glass when I picked it up. Two of the eggs had hatched!! The newly hatched fry darted all around. Scared the living daylights out of me that I came that close to dropping the whole thing into a 110 gallon tank full of always-hungry goldfish.

Through the course of the day 20 or more eggs have hatched.. and nothing looks fuzzy or white at all. Still tons of eggs yet to go, many of which sit there vibrating as the little tyke inside is doing his/her best to break free. It's such a struggle for them to hatch.. it's real hard for me to watch that and not be able to help. But I know I need to let the ones who can make do that on their own.

I still had to change the water.. which is really hard to do now. I was also a little worried about a thin film of slime building up inside the glass, so I carefully transferred them all to a fresh, clean glass. Didn't dare not to do it.

oooo! Neat! Pics of the parents? That naughty Sprocket :D

I second the request for pics of the parents! Very neat, hope to see more pics of the babies when they hatch and start developing!

You guys know I can't get decent pictures with my cell phone. But I'm trying my best. Wish I could afford to go out and get a digital camera now.

The glass they're in helps me a lot to see what's going on. The rounded shape serves to magnify what's inside. With that assistance, I managed to take some hard to see fry pictures. Will attach those here. Will also follow this post with some photos (such as they are) of the parent fish, Cassandra and Sprocket... and Sprocket's mom, Alexei.

Hooray for littluns! :D I can't wait to see the fry. Sprocket, what a rascal. He's a teenager in love, what can I say. Promiscuous little squirt.

He sure is, Iris!! And that Cassandra (the little hussy) barely knew the guy. Sheesh.

how exciting!! lol sprocket sounds like a handful :naughty:

Sprocket is such a good looking boy no wonder all the ladies can't resist him! Congrats on the unexpected spawn bet the babies will be gorgeous.

Whoever knew Sprocket was a love god? :naughty:

He's so adorable. Not only handsome, but a delightful personality too. I'm so happy to have him and Alexei.

Woo! have fun with that....sooo many eggs. Little wigglies are fun.

Sooo many eggs, lordy... if I get a decent hatch rate as it appears this may be, it's going to be a nightmare trying to raise that many fry and keep as many alive as possible. I saved as many eggs as I could, but didn't expect most of them would last long enough to hatch.

How appropriate for Valentines! Congrats!

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. Looks like that hatching begins on Friday the 13th and continues through Valentine's Day weekend.

Will post as many photos as I could get now. Seriously, it took more than 200 shots to get the first 6 photos of the first newly hatched fry this morning. He was hanging out on the side of the glass. The three following pics, I took later in the day when I saw someone was swimming around.

Thanks, Bubbles. It was a real chore doing that one egg at a time. I spent the whole day at it.

More group photos to follow now... including a snail pic of a white apple snail that was just too cute to leave out.
