Goldfish for science projects. >-(

I'd like to know the scientific merit of starvng and poisoning something to death. Id call and get the facts. This sounds way too hinky for me.

If there actually is a teacher that is that stunned, I would definitely complain. In the very least what kind of example are they setting for children?

Chances are they will all be dead from Ammo poisoning by Monday anyway, but id still get to the bottom of it.

I don't know...you haven't given any information. How long are they going to be in the cup? a day, a week, a month? what are they observing? it all makes a difference.

at any rate, I've re-read some of your posts in the thread and it dawned on me that you're still in elementary school, or close in age anyway. The "mom" part of your screen name threw me off. I do think its noble that you want to save animals that you may perceive are being harmed, you just need to do it responsibly. IMO you have a tendancy to maybe "fudge" the facts a little to make your point. When urging people to take action, you really shouldn't.

Some examples might be:

*In one thread you accused one of the chains of putting blue food coloring in the betta cups as if you knew it to be fact. When other forum members pointed out that this was unlikely, you claimed to have overhead two employees talking about it...even claimed that the blue tint in the water dyed your fish. All of this is very unlikely, and when something is very unlikely and illogical usually its not true.

*In this thread you said that the school was going to flush the fish at the end of the project. I would suspect that not to be true...maybe it is, but you should have at least confirmed that with the principal before posting that the named elementary school was going to be flushing 60-70 live fish down the toilet. I know that you may think you have all the facts from your friend who attends the school....always best to be sure before making statements that might inflame tensions. Some folks here were even urging you to call PETA & ASPCA based upon this. Talk with your parents first before sicking these organizations on the school.

I know you don't think so now, but posting the name/number of an elementary school in a thread with the potential to incite action really wasn't a good idea. With all of the craziness in schools today, the last thing schools need is the potential for violence. While this violence may be unlikely, the potential still exists. I'm sure when you have your own kids you'll likely agree.

I applaud you for your conviction with regard to saving animals. Just remember though, when you look for folks to join your cause (like you did when you urged everyone to call the school), just make sure that you're giving all the facts.

Good luck with your new goldfish!:)

Actually, I am not in Elementry school, I am in Jr. High.
They will be in cups for about a month.
They are observing their behaviors.
The teacher said herself that they are going to be flushed after the project is over.
Call the WalMart in my area and ask.

I'll call Monday and get all the straight facts.

Pre-Teen Power!

Where's Sailor Moon when you need her?

its a school...they teach kids. they're not some big, bad corporation testing chemicals on animals. all I've heard is that they're keeping fish in cups of dirty water and not feeding them at all....doesn't really make sense to me. why are they doing this? what are the experiments? do you have all the facts?

my wife is a teacher, and I can attest that teachers are some of the most hard working folks out there. call the principal if you must, but leave ASPCA & PETA out of it.....schools just don't need it. they've got a lot more to worry about.

if after talking with the principal, you still have concerns, offer to adopt all of them when they're done. as someone suggested, some LFS would be willing to take them for free.

Not to get off topic, I agree teachers are very hard working. My mom is a special ed teacher. She has been under so much stress she getting stomach ulcers.

she isnt lyeing,my LFS does this with food coloring,normally the blue water is from meds,but this was pink,red,orange yellow,green ect. the reasoning for this(according to them) was it enhances the fish's color.
dont jump down somebody's throat before you know what your talking about.

*lying

hey, does this sound like anyone we know?

Signs of Animal Addiction:

* Preoccupation with the addiction.
* Repetition of the addictive behavior.
* Neglect of self and surroundings.
* Alibis for behavior.
* Claims of persecution.
* Presence of enablers.
* Denial that addiction exists.
* Isolation from society, except for enablers and fellow addicts.
* Abuse of animals through neglect.

Exactly. Thank you.

This is getting to be a touchy subject... Yes the goldfish are getting the short end of the stick but there can be some good that comes out of this. If it sparks enough interest in just a few students (like me when I was a little kid) they may grow up to be biologists, conservationists, etc. You think this is bad, I've done labs in college that involved disecting frogs while they were still alive (but brain dead) and observed their beating hearts. As for using animals for teaching, I would prefer to have a surgeon operate on me that has practiced on animals than one that hasn't...

Also, unfortunately tons of fish die to please us aquarium hobbyists. Many many fish are culled by breeders so that the ones we love and care for look good.
