:1zhelp:My lil bro had a carnival at his school where they gave away free feeder goldfish and well my lil bro now has one in a jar. I think it sucks the jar is only slightly filled and well no filter. Reading a post by lupid on another thread and it says 10-15gal per fancy type 20 for pond types and that is by no means enough for them as they need companions since there social creatures. So my question is as a person who is trying to be a responsible fish owner what should I do??? Not much i can do financially since my own tanks need to be upgraded. So what should I do???

If putting it temporarily in any of your tanks isn't an option then I'd find a large tub and put de-chlorinated water in it and put the fish in there. If you have an extra filter and an airstone then I'd use both in the tub. If not then the tub is still better than the jar. I'd do daily 75% plus water changes too.

I'd scour Craigslist to see if you can find any real cheap set ups. If you can scrounge up about $60 then you can probably get a 20 gal tank and filter at Petsmart or Petco. You won't need a heater unless you keep your house at under 64 degrees. You can keep goldies in room temperature water.

If keeping it isn't an option I'd call a petstore to see if they'd take it.

AND THEN I'd write a sternly worded letter to the school about how irresponsible it is to give away feeder goldfish in a jar at a school function. I'd attach to that letter a basic outline of goldfish care, the nitrogen cycle and the cost related to the minimum tank size. I'd also make sure that they know that they'd probably killed a lot of fish by handing them out as prizes.

Well said and I agree!

My thoughts exactly and I didn't even have to do a lot of typing :)

or you could technically have another tank and just fill your bathtub with water and go through the regular procedures
i mean who needs to shower anyways?

eeeewwwww........

I was at the NC State fair this past weekend and I saw a booth where they had the little fish bowls and if you can toss a ping pong ball in them, you win a little feeder. The thing is, if you win five, you can trade in for a "bigger" gold fish. The bigger fish were koi, about 12-18 inches long... I couldn't believe it.

Oh cool I want a koi lol but no pond. Ok the taking it to a LFS wont happen cuz the LFS's here wont take fish in and only place that does doesnt carry feeder goldfish only giant goldfish and giant koi which would eat a lil goldfish. The local shops are closing down one by one and well theres not so many around me anymore. Ill prob check on craigslist for a tank something small like a 20gal. My tanks are not an option cuz one it hasnt been quaratined cant risk my pleco's and betta the other tanks it would be killed of eaten. Giant tub is also out since his room is limited on space. I could prob do that tub idea in my own room but my lil bro wont let me take over his fish. I yi yi. Thats why I dont own any goldfish cuz the space required to own em. I was thinking of giving him my 5gal but that would still be to small and thats my temporary home for my brigg snails. Dang I need another job
