Goldfish or Koi?

How big kids are you proofing for? There are all kinds of options...
Lowish (3-4') decorative looking fence (think white picket style) that could surround the pond with a locking gate. Doesn't have to be right next to it, could be 6 feet or more away so you can come in and get near the pond rather than having to do all your maintenance and fish watching while hanging over the fence. Also lets you have more space to landscape around the pond...

Hedges take time, but boxwood makes a very dense formal looking hedge. Roses have the poking thing to discourage kids from going through. Barberry looks kinda like boxwood, but has HUGE thorns to keep people out, and it's evergreen, too. Could run a temporary fence while a hedge grows.

Well now the husband is getting concerned about it. I was thinking about doing a fence like that and I also saw some sort of secure net you can put a few inches under the top of the water. The youngest is 1 year.
Maybe something smaller with a few goldfish for now.
If I didn't want to dig it that deep, are there heater that you can put in there through the winter? How much would that cost for electricty?

I know there are pond heaters available, and also trough heaters, sold at feed and farm supply stores. No idea on electricity usage, but it should say in any info how much juice it uses...

Did a three second google...here's one with a whole graph on the bottom of the page with how much electricity it uses...don't know if it's a good one or not, but it has some basic information...

I would think a small fence connecting to the posts of the deck should keep all yongsters out. Could make it quite atractive and create a nice shaded sitting area under the deck. The pond 4' away form the foundation will be fine. Like Beth said, you can go up to the found. if you need to. The amount of pressure from the water is about the same as the soil, so the only concern would be run-off. Run-off from p top and from rain. A simple overflow piped away from the pond will keep any excess water away from the house.

Don't sell, just do.
