Goldfish Show: Aquarama 2009

Lol... Haters really coming out of the woodwork for this one. I'll never understand the desire that people have to click links, knowing full well before hand they've got nothing positive or constructive to add. Fluff, the lionheads were bred to look like mythical Chinese lion dogs, ranchu, at least in the top view sense were bred to resemble a particular coin, and the sideviews, a relatively recent trend were bred to look good in a glass tank. The eye breeds came from the desire to see fish that would be more visually interesting from the top down, an impetus that also influenced the development of the butterfly tail. All of them are supposed to look so fat because they are meant to bring wealth and prosperity upon their keepers. Some amazing specimens there. Sadly, being on the show circuit like this takes a real toll on these fish, and I can see at least a few that might not make it home, especially that black and white ranchu. As far as why they all look so depressed, it's probably because they are being subjected to such sub par conditions. The stress of being carted to the show, put up in some empty tank with an un seasoned filter etc... Additionally, these are all extremely pampered and well taken care of fish, so the difference is probably all the more felt. Wish we could see a vid of some of these beauties.

I didn't click this thread knowing I had nothing constructive to add, I stated that they were not my thing if that makes me a hater then so be it. On the other hand I do agree that these fish are sorta like show dogs they usually live better lives than we do:)

I don't think the owner of the pics got the video, Rick. He did say he has more pics around. I just hope he post more. I just can't get enough of some of them.

Inka, i never knew any of those images associated with the various types. That is fascinating! I can clearly see the lion head looking like a lion dog! I knew there had to be a history behind the development of the various types.

I sticky thread with this info would be really neat!!!

And I wasn't coming from a hate place. Just a questioning one! I'm an info hound.

Everyone's welcome to their opinion petluver, and it's your prerogative to feel however you want about them. It just gets tedious, when every goldfish appreciation thread has at least one debbie downer talking about how ugly or "not their thing" they are. We get it, they're not for everyone. Don't need to hear it every time someone posts a pic of a goldfish. That said, you're 100% right about these fish being pampered up the wazoo. It's a careful and balanced grooming regimen that produces fish of this caliber.

Fluff, as far as the history of fishkeeping goes, it doesn't get any more storied than it does with goldfish. It took thousands of years of dedicated breeding to create the fish that we see in those pics, and we'd do well to remember that its with goldies and koi that the hobby was born.

Wow, thousands of years! That's amazing. I am sure these fish are truly pampered.

It's amazing how much work and money goes into animal breeding. For example, I learned about 4 years ago when talking with an alpaca breeder of the work going on with them in the USA. The highest price paid for one at that time was $289,000 for a proven sire.

Those that dedicate themselves to the hobby of any animal are unique people with a real passion.

there are very strict standards for goldfish just as there are for dogs and cats, and show fish are bred to that standard. these are some very refined specimens. while i agree that some are a little extreme (at least to someone used to singletails - even a common moor looks odd to me!) i an appreciate the work and discipline that goes into breeding a show fish.
that b/w ranch is a stunner!
