Good 5-10g starter kit

Well both my marineland and aqueon filters are in my closet as spares. Both worked fine when I've used them previously. One thing I would checkout on the marineland setup I don't see the filter in the picture, I've seen other marineland canopies that incorperated the filter as part of it, that could be problematic if you wanted different lighting in the future. Other then that I would go with which ever one was the cheaper one.

If you want to do live plants, I think it was mentioned earlier that screw-in CFLs can replace the incandescent bulbs. Daylight CFLs can certainly grow plants well.

I'm not sure if the LED is correct for plants though you do get the moonlights...

When I was looking for a fixture when I setup my 29g I was considering the the marineland double bright fixture, was told I wouldn't be able to grow much with it after investigating a bit more I found out the only way you can do planted and LED's is with a DIY fixture, LED's will support plant growth just that the current crop of fixtures use real cheap LED bulbs.

Alright, going to pick up the marineland LED kit today. I guess if I want to move to a planted tank in the future I'll have to buy a new hood. Thanks for the help!

The Marineland Double Bright light will grow plants in 12" tall tanks. Stems tend to head towards individual emitters. Bush plants can do well.
Any of the single bright fixtures is for a fish tank. Not a planted tank.

This might warrant a new thread, which I'll probably do in a week or so, but as far as stocking goes I'm thinking

2 male guppies
6 neon/cardinal tetra

and maybe in the future some RCS or a snail or two

would that decent for a 10 gallon or would it be pushing it with the guppies?

That sounds like a pretty reasonable stocking to me. If you do a "fish-less cycle" I would start with the tetras. The reason I would start with the tetras is they are less hardy, so I would want to get a healthy group of them established in the tank. I also would quarantine the male guppies for a couple of weeks. If you have nothing else, a jar in the tank with an airstone and a lot of water changes could work.

If the first fish are going through a cycle I would start with the guppies, and possibly add the tetras in stages. Also feed lightly when the new fish are added to allow the biological filtration some time to catch up.
