Good Beginner Beer

Wow, I am sorry biomajorstudent!

Who would have known that your simple question would have turned into a long heated debate! Made for some interesting reading though!

I just tried Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA the other day--it was really good. I don't know if it's a "beginner" beer--that may just depend on your personal preference. If you live around a brewery, you can go try a beer flight. They serve you a row of little glasses containing samples of the different kinds of beer the brewery makes, usually just a few ounces of each one. This way, you can get an idea of what's out there and what you like.

VERY good suggestion! I love getting the samplers when I visit a new brewery! =D

Also depends on where in the world you are what people will say are good beers. There are no preservatives in our beer in America, but go to Germany and there beer has them. Now I have to say they have some remarkable tasting beers!! Micro brews are gaining rapid popularity here and we have seen a big jump in brown ales and high malt/high alcohol beers. I would say try one of every style you can. I try a new beer each time we go out to dinner or if the friends have something I haven't tried, I never did and still don't drink much except socially with friends, I see no harm in that.

My recommendation for starter beers would include ones I like:
Try a summer ale they are lighter(otter creek summer ale, shipyard summer ale, saranac summer ale....many out there)
I don't like strong hops or high alcohol beers but my favorite strong beer is (Dogfish Head 90 minute, 9% but very smooth)
Any wheat beer is a good start although I hate beer with lemon or orange or spices or fruit in them so I stick with plain heffes or unfiltered offerings.
Beer is not soda so dont plan on it tasting like a sugary drink, its an acquired taste!
IMHO (everyone likes something different)
Cheers

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

Man Law: Don't Fruit the Beer!!

=( I like unfiltered wheat beers with fruit! *sniff sniff* but I'm a chick.... so the man law doesnt apply to me. :P

I leave this thread for ONE DAY, and what do you kids do? You guys are so funny! Thanks for all the great suggestions!
To those worried about my mental and/or physical health, I am just curious. I don't plan on binge drinking, I'm not doing this because of peer pressure, I just appreciate broadening my culinary horizons. I've never tried beer, so I plan to. I also bought some polenta, which I'd never tried, and I don't plan on becoming a polentaholic either. So, although I appreciate your concern, I am responsible enough to make my own decisions.

And for anyone who is curious, polenta is not that great.

Here's my suggestion- skip the Yuengling right now- it has been lousy laterly (they did a special aniversery double bock that took all the coating off of the tanks- lager now taste like the can- yuk!). Go with Blue Moon Belguim White with slice of orange, Warsteiner Dunkel (my new favorite- nice medium dark beer) or Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. All are not hoppy- hoppy beers are bitter- and not overly heavy. Best place in NE PA to go to try beers is the Arena Bar and Grill in Wilkes Barre (Get a Designated Driver). They have over 200 beers at any given time with many on tap, rest are in bottles (much better than canned beer). AS far as drinking making one an alcoholic - no. One of my best friends is an alcoholic- has not drank in 15 yrs. He still is an alcoholic. He explained it is not how much you drink, where you drink, or how; it is can you truly stop of your own free will? It is the behavior along with the physical and mental dependency that makes one an alcoholic. He also explained that most alcoholics drink not to escape the world but to escape themselves. These people without the alcohol would have problems, the alcohol just adds fuel to the fire. If they didn't turn to alcohol, they would have turn to some other addictions (food, money, drugs, etc.).
