i know some good topwater species such as danios and guppies
but what are some good midwater fish and some bottom dwellers for beginners i want a balanced aquarium on each level

tetras for the middle, corys for the bottom.

there's also hatchetfish for the top.. they're fun!

they just dart around the top of the tank.

we feed mealworms as a once-a-week treat, and each hatchetfish gets one in his mouth and it sticks up like a flagpole out of their mouth. they'll carry it around for an hour before finally eating it all. its just silly.

how about some of these for bottom feeders?

about those catfish im not planning on having live plants in my aquarium just another thing to worry about

that's okay, you can buy "algae wafers" or "sinking algae" foods easily.. it'll be good for the other fish too (the gouramis especially)

mid: harlequin rasboras, cardinal tetras, rams

Bottom: corys, pleco, peacock gudgeon
rams arent good beginner fish. they can be sensative to water quality, and german blues rams can be sensative to pH.

plecos are not good beginner fish either because they make alot of waste and some will get to massive lengths.

platies are good community fish becasue they are hardy, peacful, and swim all over the tank.

Watch out for hatchetfish, they like to jump. Make sure your tank is well covered, or else you will find little dried up "quarters" with fins on your floor from time to time. Otherwise, they are a very active and fun fish to have.

Kuhli loaches make great bottom dwellers. Very peaceful, unique in shape, and they have lots of personality. The only thing is they like to hide a lot. If you get at least 3-6 though, they will be more active. Give them places to hide, like maybe placing some tiny clay pots on their side in the bottom of your tank. They will curl up in them and declare themselves hid, even though you can see them in there.

Tetras make great mid fish. I'm partial to neons. They are colorful and fairly cheap.

Otocinclus are also cute little fish, and they do a good job on algae. They also stay small, so you dont' have to worry about a big bioload from them.
