Good 'growth' food

Frozen is fine, but it's the live stuff that I find completely unnecessary and not worth the risks. If you read about the results people get in the testimonial section at nlpublish.com (the website for New Life Spectrum) you will see how the best pelleted foods are superior. Even the president of the American Cichlid Association wrote a personal letter explaining how he got colors out of cichlids using NLS that he could not get with ANY other diet.

get as much info as you can and make your decision based on the that info.

most processed food has a break down on the label..some fish do better with higher protein others with more fiber/veggies much depends on species.
many discus breeders make their own food..much of it with shrim, beefheart etc has been thru phases of processing.beefheart will have the fat cut out of it as the fat is NOT good. shrimp can be mixed in various recipes..most of the food has been cook then either frozen or dried.

I am not an advocate of live food unless you can control the environment the live food came from..some live food (tubifex is one) can be carrier of parasites. unless you control where those came from you run the risk.(tubifex thrive in parts ot eht water where the 'sewage' collects.
you can raise tubifex in your tank if you introduce it to the mulm in your gravel..it lives on the mulm

I personally made the mistake of feeding live tubifex to my angels..I purchased from a LFS..bad move the fish had been healthy for nearly a year when I introduced the tubifex.within a few weeks I was battling internal parasites..the had to do heavy vacs every week for several weeks before I got rid of the tubifex which were thriving in the gravel.

my personal choice for food includes quality flake, pellets and frozen bloodworm(midge larvae) brine shrimp, mysis shrimp

Over the years I have read numerous post touting this or that about the kinds, concentration and frequency of foods. The bottom line is varitety and keeping it as close to natural choice as possible. I've heard of people feeding all kinds of wierd crap...from Pinkie Mice, beef heart and even hot dogs...Pellet to freeze dried...and of course, feeders. Research, change it up occasionally, and buy the best you can afford. I use a lot of frozen raw shrimp. This time of year is great for bargains on that. Bottom line is there is no better thing you can do for growth than to provide frequent large water changes and a varied diet.

If I add saurkraut, will the plecs eat it? :sim:

What are their nutritional values? How are they more nutritious than other live foods? How are they more nutritious than high quality pellets?

Has anyone tried feeding crickets? If you get them in large quantities they are inexpensive. You could share a big order with some reptile-keeping friends...

If I was feeding earthworms or redworms, I'd culture them myself. Let's face it- the bait industry isn't interested in the continued good health of the fish that eat their product.
