Got the worst cold ever

be a man about it and go sweat it out at the gym. I go running, hit the bag, or rock climbing then take a long hot shower followed by a good bit of rest and back to 120% the following day :D

Had one that literally almost killed me. I was maintaining a constant temp of 104.5, could not eat anything, could not drink so much as a teaspoon of fluid, could not sleep. In the first 6 days, I lost 30 lbs. (Mind you, this is when I was 17... at the time I was 6'3" and 165lbs... I didn't have the weight to lose) By the time I finally got to a point of asking my dad to take me to the hospital, I was practically delusional. My sinuses were so packed that they were literally draining through my tear ducts into my eyes. I pretty much couldn't see anything at that point... everything hurt... I had a HORRIBLE cough, (bronchitis) which ultimately ended up cracking a rib. My throat hurt so bad that every time I coughed, I wanted to cry. (and I'm not exactly a sissy... I've taken more pain in my 22 years than most people experience in their lifetime)

I'll be honest, I don't remember every diagnosis they made while I was at the hospital... but what I can tell you is that when I got there, they had me in a room with 5 nurses before my father could even start the paperwork. The admitting nurses were afraid I was going to die right in the Emergency waiting room. They pumped 2 liters of saline solution into my blood to try to rehydrate me... and of all ironies, the tech putting the IV in was in such a hurry that they completely forgot to purge the 4' bubble in the line prior to hooking it up. I'm lucky that didn't kill me. My dad looked like he was going to rip the dude's face off... or at least from what I can remember. They had to put some UV dye in my eyes and inspect them to see if my corneas were damaged. (not too bad... but they were both scratched up) They ended up doing 2 ct's and a bunch of x-rays on me that night too. I do remember that I had bronchitis, conjunctivitis, eye infections, (beyond the sinuses draining into them) ear infections, and some other REALLY bad stuff that happened to my GI track. All from some unsanitary conditions at work, and a lack of proper protective gear. (Yes, could have had a huge lawsuit if I found a way to prove that it was their fault)

Full recovery took me just shy of 4 months... all the mean while I was back at work, pushing carts in the rain with a broken rib and a horrible cough. (by myself, since they lost several employees, and the machine to assist with gathering carts was broken... mind you, this was for a HIGH volume Target store in Anaheim Hills, CA)

Yeah.. bad experience. :\

Take 2 Hikari Algae Wafers and call me in the morning...:)

You might consider calling a doctor, though... Six days seems a little long to have that bad of a sore throat. Could be strep, or something else.

Strep is going around my area. Best to go see a doc!

I had a cold for two months once. I spent most of the semester at college hacking away during classes and practically living on cough drops, woke up suffocating on some gunk lodged in my esophagus one night, that wasn't too pleasant.

by the way... you generally dont have a cold for more that a couple days... if its any longer than a week, say, its likely something else and it just doesnt feel worse because you may have an excellent immune system. :)

cold-like illnesses that can last a while consist of..

certain types of flu.. mononucleosis.. strep.. thrush... sinus infections... severe hay fever(this is the most common)

The life cycle of the common head cold is 3 days coming (itchy runny nose, slight sore throat from drainage), 3 days here (stuffy nose, slight sore throat, coughing), 3 days going (runny nose, slight sore scratchy throat from drainage). Most people do not run a fever with the common cold. A severe sore throat and a fever are signs of strep, which is bacterial, or a viral infection. Lasting more than 3 -7 days the odds are that it is either influenza or bacterial. What most people think is a cold that lasts weeks or months is actually an allergy. Hayfever being the most common in the fall. Allergies do mimic a cold.

I have had this cold for at least 6 days and whenever i swallow it feels like im swallowing a razor blade:lipssealedsmilie:.Has anyone else had a cold this bad before?

You need to be careful with the 'swallowing razor blade' feel. You might have strep throat. And if so, you need to see a doctor and get antibiotics. If you dont get antibiotics soon enough with strep throat, you will get rhuematic fever.

I learned the hard way.
