Gravel vacuum question

just to point out, since no one has asked how large of a tube the OP is using.
the python is a 5/8" tube, connected to a piece of 2" PVC basically.

the larger part does a wonderful job of stirring up the gravel in the large 2" piece, and sucking out the debris.

the gravel is simply too large to be sucked completely up by the larger piece, due to the change of flow (designed this way).

i dont know why anyone would say a python/gravel vac isnt worth it.
though you can build one yourself for cheaper i think. Buy a waterbed drain and fill kit... same thing, different colour :), attatch some tubing, and a 2" piece to the end.... viola, "no spill drain & fill"
 
Ive been using this one for a couple of months now without any problems, wish i could find a narrower and longer tube tho.

I bet the "ghetto python" works every bit as well as the store bought version.

I wouldnt see any reason why not.


tks4d2: Look for a drink in your local liquor stores (or corner store depending on where you live) called Rev .... the bottles would make a perfect python tube. they are fairly long, rigid, and about the right size diameter.

you will be quite pleased with your purchase.... especially after you consume the contents so you can use the bottle..... plus you will have 3 "extras" which you will be even more happy about afterwards.
 
Just buy a gravel vac, they're cheap-like $6???
You're going have to stir up the gravel regardless of what you use.
 
Aquafina bottle would work well too.

However, I agree with Sweetness8t5. You'll spend $3-5 in supplies (if not more) from Lowes, Home Depot, etc... and have some fugly looking thing next to your great looking aquuarium. Or spend $6-8 for a professionally looking one.
 
Yea i would of bought one at walmart for about $7 but there was tubing laying around in the garage and the bottle was practically free.
Saving $7 not bad, especially when your a student.
