greech's Simple 40 Breeder

Thanks everyone! Glad I could motivate you to get up off the couch Benson :)! Steeler, I did have an issue but a good sump and overflow cleaning seems to have solved that for the most part. I also stopped storing my top-off water containers out in the 100+ degree garage. Not sure which was a bigger contributer, just glad it is going away!

may have to do that too...the garage thing as the sump bug hasn't bitten me yet :-)

Soooo.. did you get a wave going in your tank? ;)

I upgraded my standard controller to the ES model about a year ago and I have yet to use (or even figure out) the extra features it gives you. There is one extra feature that sounds awesome called Nutrient Transport Mode, which mixes making a wave for a while and then reefcrest for a while. Sounds like the best mode to use, unfortunately I have never been able to figure out how to make it work, it always stays on one mode or the other, never switches like the manual says it should. Kind of frustrating spending $100 to upgrade a $400 powerhead and not get anything extra out of it.

Just got home. Getting ready to try. Lights were off last night.

I've heard about the NE mode. Lot of people like it. Ecotech offered to upgrade the controller to a wireless for $100 while I was on the phone with John but I wasn't sure I would want wireless. Wasn't sure if I wanted that so I held off. Seems to me it would be better to run 2 vortechs that are not synced?

In a large tank, the wireless feature is a great option to sync them, but in tanks 4' or less, I agree with you, no real reason to sync them. It would actually make the water more turbulent to not sync them in smaller tanks, which to me is a good thing.

Never seen those before. They seem ok but one glaring issue seems to be only 1 plug, so you can't have dusk/dawn settings with the blue (unless you are there and manually turn the knobs when the light comes on). They also don't list what degree optics they use. The site says: LED angle 25, 60, 90, 120 degree, whatever that means. They are coming out with a 90w and 120w version, I would guess the 90w would be perfect on a 40G. If it cost $400 for 20 LEDs it will probably be at least $500 for the 90w. I couldn't spend that knowing I can make it for 1/2 the cost but if your not a DIY'er and they fix the power cord issue/add a second, then I would seriously consider the 90w fixture for a good high quality LED light for a 40G.

Side note, their website is like LED Porn.. I am drooling looking at that site. They have some sweet LED lights that would work perfect on an Algae Scrubber!

Cool. I can get the 60W for $250 versus $400 so I am betting I can get a similar % off the 90. Thought about the cord issue and that is an issue I have with them.

I talked to "Peter" on that site, he said the 90w is out but only for Spain at the moment, and the 120w will be out any day. The 120w has a programmable controller on it instead of knobs (Nice!) and he said the 60w does come with 2 power cords now.

The 60w Cree light is $185 + shipping, unfortunately shipping cost about $90 from China so 1 fixture isn't a good deal, but for a store or group buy scenario, 10-20 fixtures makes shipping a whole lot better.

Great info. Thanks for following up!
