Grins' 55g Reef

I use 25ml of part A and 15-20ml of part B, daily except for WC day on Sat. The half gallon size lasts over a month for me. I've also added up to 60ml of part A at a time, and part B max dosing was 45ml. No problems(I don't suggest you do, but just giving my experiences with it) With the bigger doses I would dose one part in the morning and one part at night. I guess if you have an extra $600+ for new CA reactor, complete, I'd go for it. Right now, I can't do that and $22 every month or month and a half just seems right for me at this time. I do plan on getting a reactor, lights are first for me, another $600-700.:wall: Why does everything have to be so expensive?

Yes, I know, have been around a long time. I just think it is crazy to pay big money for mostly plastic, ie. skimmers, reactors, sumps, and the like. And, yes I am crazy, must be, I've bought some of this stuff before .

Joe, I use a two part on my 120 and it works just fine, IMO, mostly SPS and fairly stocked. Would like to get a reactor when I can afford it, we'll see, have to do lights first $$$.
Grins, I took pics, now pacing in my head, whether or not to put them up. How is everything going in your tank these days, Apitasia? Any thing new? I haven't check your blog for a week or so. I hope no more tickets or being drug through the woods for you, oh and I forgot about the water issue.
Matt

Hope you share the photos because I love your tank.

My own tank is fine. I need to pick up some more Joe's for the few aiptasia I missed but mostly it has gone well. I've not posted photos because I somehow changed the memory card to read only.

I think the reason that 2 parts are hard for large tanks are probably due to:

1. It would get expensive. I know the 2 part solution goes pretty fast in my 29g tank, I can only imagine how much you'd have to add to keep up with a 180!

2. When you add a lot of it at one time there's the chance of it injuring something before it disolves in the water. This would mean that you'd really (for safety sake) have to add it slowly, which would be time consuming. I use 10 mL a day of each part in my 29g, so it you had a well stocked 180 you'd probably need to add roughly 70 mL of each per day....

I think a reactor is just easier...it's automated.

I agree, a reactor is easier and often more economical for a large tank. I'm surprised though how much you're having to add for your 29g. I was aggressive when balancing my numbers out, I increased the Ca by 20ppm per day (20 capfuls of what I use). But once I hit maintenance I only add a single capful per day of each.

Face it, we're all certifiable if we were to add up what we spend on this.

That is what I always read or hear about Damon, that in larger tanks the benefits don't out weigh the cost.

As for Ca, I add approx. 50 ml (probably closer to 45) of the Kent Ca. 3 days a week, then I use Coral Vite 3 days a week, and once a week I use Purple Up until I finish this last bottle.

As for a reactor, someday if I am a good boy in the future Santa might bring me one. :headshake2:

Yes we are  Grins, have to be to justify spending thousands of $ over the course of my time spent in the hobby.
I will post some later today, I promise.
I was kind of thinking the same thing about Sub's comment. Before my tank was where it needs to be, I was adding a lot, including dosing MG at very elevated levels(was very low,IMO), I think this is why I wasn't seeing much improvement, in the CA levels, once the MG is where it needs to be, everything else seems to fall into place, for me at least. So now, the amts I add daily give me a constant level of 450ppm for CA, 1400ppm for MG, and 3.75 mEq/L for Alk, almost 10 DKH. Strontium levels run around 12ppm, I don't test this as much as the others, but it was low too before.

Save some money.
There has been reports that DOW raised the bromide content of the Calcium Chloride.
The affects of these elevated levels is unknown.
There has been no reports over the last year of any systems failing because of 2-part solutions.
The use of activated carbon, water changes, and strong skimming help reduce the elevated levels.
