Well, I brought my female swordtail along with probably 10 fry and 1 mid sized juvenile to the lfs yesterday. I couldn't handle the constant breeding any longer. How to keep a tank lightly stocked with an infinite input of new fish?!

I kept the male though, at least for now. If it wasn't for his brilliant splendour, I'd have brought the pair to the store a long time ago. He may end up going as well if he looks lonely in the tank. I don't like to have individuals of a species (exception: betta), especially those that are so close. It was a sad moment indeed, they pressed heads together through the plastic bag.

Oh well, had to be done. One thing I've learned is that I can breed swordtails fantastically.

I did get 3 small albino cories for my troubles though. And if I end up bringing back the male, I'll replace him with a school of neons.

Livebearers are not for me either - to me they are the vertebrate form of algae, but cannot be controlled by light or nutrients.

I do keep a long-isolated line of common guppies to keep my idle QT/plant grow-out tanks alive, but surplus there goes to the LFS as feeders if they do not serve as feeders in my own tanks.

Neons are pretty, but I have recently found the ever lovely rummy nose tetras. They do get a bit bigger but that great red nose is priceless.

Sorry you had to return the female swordtail. Too bad you weren't lucky enough to have the only live bearer that can't seem to get things going like I do. My male platy still hasn't produced any offspring. But he does like to eat. Oh well.

What is wrong with neons? I know that some can be on the delicate side, but my experiences with cardinals and harlequin rasboras has been far worse as of late...

An option to neons would be glowlights, I love mine and they don't bicker like neons do.

I didn't think they could....

I've just confined my female swordtail to a birthing tank because the male chases her around and eats all the babies every time. I've only managed to get one baby out of them who is now half grown.

Happychem - my male sword is also hanging out around the birthing tank, I don't know whether he's missing his mate or the chance of a tasty snack.
