I have got some almost black looking hair algae starting to kill my grass and cabomba.... any ideas on a good way to get rid of it?

250gallon planted tank
playsand and pea gravel substrate
slate caves
fluval fx-5
2 biowheel 350's
lights on 10:15am to 8:15pm

My pressurized c02 equipment is in but i havent gotten it set up yet.

i have 8 compact flourescent bulbs with R40 reflectors. i dont remember the actual wattage of the bulbs though.

Although I cant help much with the hair algea, I have to same problem. I would love to see some pics of the tank!
Ironicaly I use those energy saving bulbs too. They give the tank an amazing look and I get nice shimmers.

i also had the same problem on all of my giant val and on some of my swords it got pretty bad but when i moved my clown and snow king back into the tank it went away. but it was the same gray almoast black hairy strands that i had.

here are some pics of the nasty little stuff

can anyone identify what type it is... almost looks like staghorn?

If you've got Staghorn, you're in for a good fight. I wound up triming a lot of leaves. I have two pieces of drift wood that got it bad. I pulled them out of the tank and gave them a good scrubbing in a week it looked like I fed the stuff rather than try to get rid of it. Pulled them out again and gave them a real good scrubbing with a stiff brush, threw them into the micro-wave for 3 minutes, and then scrubbed them down again. I got some mollies and they are doing a great job of eating any new starts.

well then lets hope that its not staghorn and that removing it will be as easy as setting up the pressurized co2 system at some point this week.

some SAS and some Ottos might be something to pick up as well. i hear the SAS are good for this kind of thing
