Any recommendations? Things you look for when buying new tanks? Brands of equipment that you would recommend?

Buy the biggest tank you can afford. Buy a stand you like and can afford. Buy some gravel you like and can afford. Then come home and go shopping online. Buy all your supplies, heater, filter(s), test kit, water conditioner, food, etc. online at either bigalsonline.com or petsolutions.com You will save BIG BIG BIG $$ compared to buying your stuff at the LFS. You can even buy your hood and lights online if your new tank doesn't come with them.

When you get home with your new tank and such, let us know how big it is and what you plan on keeping. Then we can advise you on what types and sizes of filter(s) to buy, heater, etc.

HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Harlock, master of the ambiguous answer will tackle this one: It depends.

It depends on how much room you have for a tank, what you want to house in it, what your budget is, etc. For me, it seems the biggest consideration is price. I have a family and so any tank equipment is luxury money and I try and spend it as thriftily and frugally as possible. Brands also depends. Brands for what kind of equipment? Will the tank be planted or unplanted? That's a big consideration when it comes to filters and lighting. If we had more details I bet a bunch of us could give our $.02 worth.

I agree with gsk about shopping online. I have a fluval 404 canister filter. The best price I could find locally was 149.99 and that was a sale price. Big Al's had it for 89.99 regular price. Big Al's is the way to go for me, I don't use petsolutions because they are located in my state and I don't want to pay sales tax. There is also ThatPetPlace.com.

Also, if you're not against used, check out ebay. You can search your local area and alot of times they have new stuff too. I've had great luck on there the last few months in terms of fish stuff. Can't hurt to look!

Not against used at all :)

I think we're looking at a 90... was just fishing for random suggestions.

Well, any ideas on what you'd stock it with or if you'll go planted?

I saved so much buying used recently when I got my 45 gallon. I just about stole the tank. You have to wait around for something to come around for sale, but when you do, its worth it for the money saved.

I'm definantly planting it... remember answering my incessent questions about using sand for a substrate? :)

I love tiger barbs and am thinking of a large school of them and a few larger fish to go with them like convicts or something. Also considering getting a big school of neon's (or another small tetra) and a bunch of guppy's...

I don't want real big fish... I want some stone decorations, some plants, and a bunch of busy fish :)

As far as used tanks are concerned, Im ALWAYS open to good deal when I see it. It doesn't matter if I need it, have space for it, or whatever...If I find a good deal on a used piece that I even have an inkling of an idea I might use somewhere down the line, Ill buy it. The less likely I am to use it, the better the price has to be.

I mean, heck, if someone offered me a 300g tank for $75 Id jump on it, even though I don't have the space for it or the immediate desire to have a tank that large. Id buy it and house it until later.

Im always looking at Ebay and the like for used stuff or even "cant pass up deals" on new stuff. When you find a new LOT of 10 new in box Aquaclear 200's for $60 you tend to jump on it. Never know when you might need a spare or 3.
