Holly9937 if you found out you are pregnant...congratulations. I cannot tell you about the dangers of fishkeeping in regards to pregnancy, but I can tell you if you have a cat, be carefull. there are dangers with changing the litterbox and toxoplasmosis(sp?). Also if you have a female dog they have worms. Even though people worm their female dogs from what the vet tells me... the opportunity is always there to pass them on to humans. Something to do with their heat cycle.

I believe a person can be tested to see if they have anitbodies for toxoplasmosis. Many people who have kept cats for a while already have antibodies...it's more of a concern for people who don't have cats, and then are exposed.

Toxoplasmosis is the correct term. I've never heard about the issue with worms and pets though...don't know if there is an actual concern with the fetus being harmed. Definitely wasn't a issue of concern when I went through my pregnancies, but "they" always seem to come up with some new way to freak new moms-to-be out!!! :P Some issues seem to change with trends, others (listeriosis for example) are worth protecting yourself against.

Regarding fishkeeping, I'd wear gloves when doing anything in the water, and would use gloves when doing water tests as well...best not to chance skin contact with the chemicals.

BTW, Congrats Holly9937!

I have chronic Asthma and my fish tank doesn't effect me. It was under the advice of my GP that I got fish as I wanted a pet and can't be within 10 feet of a cat / dog without wheezing my lungs out!
I agree with the other posts that if you are particulary suceptable to spores / fungi (I am) then be careful but I just take a couple of puffsa of ventolin if it starts acting up. I have never had an attack from dealing with my tank and i suffer form them quite regulary

just my wheezy .02!

Thanks guys!! I was very happy to hand over the litterbox duties to my husband, and my dogs are all fixed! But I agree, everytime I look online some other odd thing is suddenly bad, and I know both of our familes are going to be freaks about everything, especially all the pets :dog:

They're making you get rid of your fish tank? Simply ask them to talk to a qualified physician first.

EDIT: Heck, here is a link to an article on a medical website saying people with HIV (you know, the AIDS virus? The one that makes fighting infections a losing battle?) should keep their pets and specifically gives advice on aquariums.

You have to get rid of your fish? That's ridiculous. I've got multiple allergies, including pet dander (having a cat would cause constant asthma attacks for me!) But the fish tank has no effect whatsoever. I'd recommend seeing an allergist to get more info before losing the tanks. Besides testing for asthma, have you had any allergy testing done?
