Healthy Angelfish with stuff hanging from his fins - keeps going away and coming back

I may have said it. I just dont want to spend a lot on this. I'll look on Craigslist for one.

I know ;)
Since youre in DC area, search for local fish/cichlid clubs or society where you can meet new fishy friends :thm:and exchange info/livestocks as well as second hand items.

twas sundragon that said 5 gal. me thinks the quote feature is a lil wonky in this thread, lol.

check out the big box pet stores in your area. i've seen mention of a $1/gallon sale but for the life of me i can't remember what store is doing it currently.

Petco has the $1 per gallon right now. 10 gallon up to 55 gallon. Through the 15th I think, but maybe longer. I'd hurry... they go pretty fast.

Haha, you're all right - I just got a 10 Gallon for $10. I think the 5 Gallon was more expensive! I now have a quarantine tank!

I was SOOOO tempted to grab a 55 and start a new tank in my home office

So here's the update:
I tested the tank again today.
pH: 6.8
A: 0
N: 0
NO3: 20

The Angel is the same - I did quite a bit of research online and I think it's likely lymphocystis (small nodules on the fins) - It can appear on the body and fins - it's also a virus that's specific to a breed of fish which explains why it's not affecting the other fish - it rarely kills which is why the angel has been acting normally for the most part - it can reoccur - which is what's happening.

I've attached two pictures with the best quality image of the nodules/lesions/growth. Please note the yellow/orange growth on the ventral fin in the first photo.

The other option is Fin rot with fungus (though the fins are not red, no blood) of fungus all by itself.

the mystery got a little deeper - I found one dead neon this morning... I took it out and it looked normal - no color loss, no lesions, no visible reason for it's death... None of the fish had touched it...

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the Angel's condition. The others seemed okay and came up to eat.

I'm now left scratching my head as to what's going on...:shakehead:

I had the same thing on my two Angel Fish!!!!! Was so perplexed about it, didn't think it was fin-rot, fish were eating and behaving very normally. I have never heard of a fish shedding. I am being EXTRA vigilant about my water changes and vacuuming and will see what happens. What parameters are great. Any input would really help me.... I tend to get overly anxious about anything weird with my fish!!

Sorry, but misery loves company - Glad I'm not alone or hallucinating - Where did you purchase your Angels? Are they Kois as well?

Update

Ok, so here's the updated info after a few days:

  • 2 neons dead
  • Maracyn Plus added Dosing - Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
  • Heater was replaced (original was for a 20 gallon and I purchased a 200w so I can use the original heater on the 10 gallon quarantine tank)
  • pH issues

I went to the LFS and showed them the pictures. They said it looks like fungal growth and offered Pimafix. I mentioned that I have Maracyn Plus, and they said that will work. Came home and proceeded to start the first treatment last night. following the directions on the bottle.

I counted neons this morning at feeding and there were 6. I used to have 8 and one died a few days ago with no symptoms. I am considering there is something else going on in the tank and the fungus must be a secondary symptom or not related.

both neons looked "normal" a little faded color, but no spots, blotches, fungus or lesions. They have been in the tank for some time and the only "new" additions were the 2 Otos...

I'm going to continue treating with Maracyn Plus and hope there are no more casualties

the last two water tests came up with one more anomaly: pH

I think there may be something wrong with my pH test as it showed a pH of 7.8 (dark blue with API testing kit), and then I tested it with High pH testing and it registered the lowest pH on that meter 7.4 - I don't think it registers any lower than 7.4... I tried the regular pH test again 3 times with the same results. So I tested the pH of tap water and it registered 7.8 also... Identical color to the tank water.

I haven't done a water change and only a few days ago the water registered 6.8, which is what it has registered since I set it up... the first test was last night before the Maracyn Plus, and again twice today... I was tempted to do an immediate water change of 50% but when the tap water tested very high pH, I realized it may be the testing solution not the test.

  1. What would cause such a pH spike?
  2. Could it be the pH test became contaminated? I may have put the wrong top on the wrong bottle??
  3. I'm using DIY CO2 (2 2 liter bottles), that I just restarted. Though I've never seen a pH spike when renewing CO2...

I have been watching the fish more over the last few days since neon one gave up it's ghost and they haven't changed - all eat, all swim normally, sing kumbaya... Which is nice, but it leaves me with very little to go on...

Water parameters:
pH: 7.8??
A: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20
KH: 4
Temperature: 80 degrees.

Any assistance would help.

Last update for BrainLady:

A week of treating the water with Maracyn Plus per instructions and the angel seems fine - If you feel the need to treat - you may want to try it or an anti-fungal.

I continued doing water tests and I believe there was an issue with the pH testing solution - the day after the very high pH of 7.8 - I tested the following day and the pH was back to what it has been the entire time so I can safely say it was contaminated some how.

The water conditions have been as follows for the last few days I have tested both day and night to see if the DIY CO2 makes a difference:

pH: 6.8
A: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20
KH: 4
Temperature: 80 degrees.

No other neon tetra deaths - I think that may have been either a isolated issue or the Maracyn Plus took care of what was killing them.

I'm going to do a water change in the next 24 hours. I will let you know if that has any affect.
