I began the hobby at the ripe old age of eight and it was all due to winning a goldfish in a bowl at a fair. Im 69 years young today> Now im sorry to have to say what I feel from reading only this one thread in general marine>


Its crazy to think that most people honestly post for professional views and what they get at many a time, is a bashing or called names and lord knows what else>

I giving up on something like this in trying to answer any and all eel questions for beware of who be on the other end of the key board, for its one thing in owning a eel or two and then its another when a person as myself who has been in the hobby for just more then six decades and I can tell you all that for my great deal of that time, some 35 years+ I had and owned some seven eels at most all those years and anywhere from 3-7 years the eels depending on the species and interest I had in them.

I found that for the short six years or so that I been in forums, I answered every eel question back then no matter how it sounded or as often I might had answered the same question time and time again. There was someone who kept on attacking me for he hated me and I kept on answering less and less questions until now, I answer no more.

I sign up here to view the reef forum, but thought that I might look into general marine and seen this thread on "How often do you feed your eel?" and so much bashing was seemingly happening. People back then when i answered not liked me for if I not agreed with their project, they answer sometimes then with a attitude as well say what do I know.

Its always plain to see that most anything one is doing with tank species that most figure it to work forever in which is honestly not the case. Like at one other forum site, im still waiting for this person to post an update that he has two Tess morays in a 180 with a zebra moray and at that time, he had them for a number of months. This person wanted that I shown him proof that that will not work and I told him that if you not take my word for it, that in time to come he will have his proof.

But I thought of the ones who I did help and number that I not because some other tells them that what they wanted to do will be OK, they went that way. Also many hated me due to one other kind of a person and they know nothing for in all I viewed in the post ing at that site, he only told one true line. There do happen to be few people who pretends to be far greater in knowledge then they really are and then we the ones who are knowledgible in most they say. The idea there be, you who ask the questions need to read with a more open mind then to simply select the answer that makes you happy only.

Today I not see all the same people with the Tess moray they had and they are argued with me when I told them their tanks and inhabitants will not work. The worst thing in this is when the hobbyists are so young in age and experience.

We all can learn things from each other in all types of topic issues for there be far to great in numbers of marine species that none of us can know them all. Another thing I know is that some, specially one answers on a species even that this person has no true professional views to offer other then what was readied on the internet in search. As well, most or all know that the search you do on eels or other species are at most in what you would find will be basic data info only and when it comes to eels, the data info which is being offered are mostly the same in three type of areas.

But at most myself on trying to assist others ever again, I giving up on the idea that I might be able to help due to the hobbyists who a nasty attitude. Read around in all the forums you can find and if your no idea in which im speaking of, you will see just the same of the ones who act as they know other then in simply trying to offer any assistance that they who ever they be bash others on the topic other then offer his or hers professional views.

Im not rejecting my membership here due to the ones who answers in general marine threads for my postings when ready to do my tanks will be mostly on reef topics only. For by those who answers with an attitude only shows that this person can never be the type of professional hobbyist they seem to sound they are.

Also because of misspelling, this is another thing many go by ones knowledge, for myself I have much wrong in my medical history and it gives me great many problems in best at most in explaining myself for im not a good typist, that in order to get it out better, I would have to edit this post so many times and still I feel that its not perfect.

Now im in time to do the one type of tank I not done in my six decades and longer, im about in time to start two large SPS coral tanks and will have two pair of dwarf eels with clams. I will have questions on a good number of SPS corals and perhaps some soft corals as well.

I had some electrical work done at my home, I now have near the two reef tanks, two new outlets with two lines each of 20 amps and the two normal outlets of 15 amps each making it a total electrical power of 110 amps. Now in time, the lights will be changed from 175 watts MH to 250 watts.

So, I will be here and as time go by when the reef tanks are being loaded with live stock, I will have a great deal of photos and hopefully much later, I can get that digital camcorder I had been wanting as well.

So im new here, I will have any number of coral questions as well as small fish species, etc..

Please understand, I spoke my mind in what I seen in just that one thread, and that is over, I no further thoughts on it or anything and now im moving on>

Welcome! We can always use more experience!

We do our best to maintain a friendly enviorenment. After all, it is about the fish! Sometimes people will ask for help and pick the advice that gives them the answer they want. We can only offer up our help and hope they make the right choice.

As I am sure you are aware, everyones tank and experience with a given fish has many variables. What works for some doesn't work for all, and it is rare to see someone post later saying I didn't listen and this "bad" thing happened. But I have received, as this site has, many thanks from folks who heeded advice.

Sometimes people will ask for help and pick the advice that gives them the answer they want.

Bishop, hello there> I guess from your living on the west end of NC that you live far on the other side of the mountains? In that of what you said is one of the many problems in this hobby, but with me Bishop, there was a lot more for one person has then single me out and did many attacks and had their buddies join in and on one site, this person tried to compete with me when after this person view the topic once or twice for as this is one of those kind of people im speaking of.

As you said, none of us have the very same tank and this happens to be in setup as well as in maintenance, for what works for some does not mean that its works for everyone. Tank size topics however is another matter. For like myself, I house eels in there species only tanks with a number of damsels only. No Trigger, Grouper or tangs, anything else you would care to mention.
As for bad things to happen, that can happen too anyone and everybody> But when people are listening to one who has no true success other then what that person been bragging about, that XX had most any fish you almost care to mention. But he never admits to those people at one site who thinks of XX as some godly figure, as the site expert as some there put it, I do get a lot of laughs out of it and most of what XX post.

This, what im about to tell you will be a dead giveaway who this person is> This person for a year or so use to keep popping in on me in instant message on line> This person never said hello to me or ask how your doing, when XX wanted to ask something XX said that im glad your on, I a question and XX ask it. Also that this will grab you more, for XX the chance to buy a dragon moray and he asked me if I can tell him the gender and how I see the eels health be. For as well, sometime well before that, he was going to possible buy a dragon eel one who came in at that forum site posting a photo only afterwards and I told the people that this eel was extremely unhealthy and all gone on to say that I couldn`t tell from a photo that the eel look to be alright to them.

This person trying too sell the eel was trying to convince me and I told him that of the photo he post that the dragon moray if healthy will not simply lay out in front of the LR, but be behind it and as well, that eel was looking very lame if you know what I mean.

Later, this person withdrawn his sale, some thought i was wrong and I told them that if that person was on the level to sell a healthy eel, and that if the eel was healthy, he not would had withdrawn his for sale offer> If those people were to buy that eel and it died, it would had only proved me right and as I said, if I was wrong, he not had withdrawn his for sale offer. And one last thing on this, the part that this person who wanted that I tell him the gender of the dragon eel before XX buys. I told XX its a female and due to having a buddy working somewhere that this person was able to get a fre DNA done. After it was told to me that they would do it, I told them to go right ahead, the gender will not change as it not for the people doing the DNA said that its a female.

At one site, many are asking this person how they can tell the gender of a dragon moray, and XX says only by a DNA. That if anyone was to tell them the gender, they not be correct for that they might get it right some 25% or so. That person who said those things know that I can tell of the dragon moray eel gender and will never tell the truth to others and now for the better part of 2.5 yeats, this person tells more fiction then more anyone I know.

I resigned twice from two sites and once from another because of this person attacks, as in one, was most nasty because the mods there allowed it and to think I was a mod there for their eel forum. And then I was no more posting answers in their eel forum and so, this person attacked me in the forum in which I was trying to get the best in camera equipment and then he came in that his sick and even said at the start that he will be a nasty in saying anything he can to me, and then I told the mods once again to revoke me again.

In all honesty, if I found that being in any forum is not worth the pain in the neck some gives to others, I not would joined anymore. That later once the reef tanks I have are stock with live stock, that I would look to start my own personal site. For I am however able to learn anything I want with all the people who I can email that are out in the field and a good number of these researchers, im able to call them as well.

Now understand, I not a problem here. I only viewed something that I seen to many times and its really discussing that hobbyists sign up at these sites to get info if they can on their project and I can go somewhere to show you someone who has an attitude that acts like someone who knows far better.
It is why I quit on the idea of ever trying to assist on eel questions again and this person who done all of what I said, knows the things I know, and no> this person not know what I know>

I know of the eel from when are still in their eggs as well of their internal organs and body function. Many think not of any of this to be important and perhaps its not important but still, how many times you heard of some eel releasing a large prey they caught while this prey was in its jaws? Can you say why this is?

You would be more surprised on how complex the eel body really is>

That's life on the internet, and so many young people these days have no discipline and respect. Don't ever take it personally OldManOfTheSea. Do not let it get you down.

I use to get very upset with people who would argue on and on with me or attack me online. Someone gave me advice for this which has been very helpful. If you have something to say about something, speak your mind, then drop it. If someone comes along to argue or berate you, they will be arguing alone, because you've already said what you had to say and you're done with it.

If you feel the need to revisit threads to check for more questions, and someone is harrassing you, you can report it as was suggested, but more importantly, you have the ability to put people on "ignore" on most forums. USE that. Don't get caught up in someone's need to feed their ego.

Those who don't listen or berate will learn better in time. It doesn't matter if you can't prove you're right, immediately. You can offer your experience, but the responsibility does not rest on your shoulders to make everyone listen and understand. When the inevitable happens, they will think back to what you said, and they may then begin to do things the right way, even if they don't tell you so.

It would be a shame to lose the knowledge of someone like yourself because of a few bad apples. Some people will ask a question with an answer already in their head and will not take any advice unless it is what they want to hear, but this is their fault and will ultimately pay the price with sick or dead fish. I myself have learned a lot in this forum and have also been proved wrong in some cases. This is how I learn. Some people don't. All I can ask is that you do not cease to help those that wish to truely learn something because of the bad things you have stated above. Although I understand your frustration this forum would be pretty useless if everyone stopped giving advice because of the few "bad" ones that attack opinions and experience.

I don't honestly take it personal, but it does somewhat make me feel as I wasted much time when many seemed to not care of hearing it from those who has much personal background on the issue of moray eels.

I was sticking with it for the better part of more then two years with all those attacks going on. For as its been said, its up to the hobbyist with the question what they wish to take into account of their present situation.

Do however be sure that I will report anything out of what the topic is that anything personal being said off from the topic, I would give this sites mods the chance to make whatever adjustments first before having to make the request to revoke my membership here. For if the mods not control the ones who be with an attitude, things do and will get way out of hand.

It would be a shame to lose the knowledge of someone like yourself because of a few bad apples

Plecosterone, that is what one said in RC after I request my membership to be revoked. For I stood out like a sore thumb as you might say. Go into some those sites and see my past post responses, I was best known as "Dragon Moray Eels" View my answers at RC and tell me then if I was acting as a hot head> In one other site, the site crashed and I not know if all be in there, I was answering any and all questions as a mod at XXXXXXXX, I will PM you that site and you can check for yourself.

The thing be as well, I cannot deal with trying to tell those in what's best anymore for also in swf site, there too folks were as rude as can be and so, I hang it up as an eel expert who can offer some answers. Also one of those bad apples as you put it has always singled me out because I wouldn't answered him in instant message anymore, that I told this person that I would only answer his questions in the forums and XX not like that and after that, this person post a bunch of nonsense and the others believed him and soon after I resigned my mod position and afterwards, my membership as well.

And what's more funny, the two administrators there emailed me asking for me to come back and were playing it as if I was asking them to were when I asked them on their word that they will not allow the type of nonsense to happen as from before and this part took some time to get their word on it. They never kept their word and a matter a fact, one says for me to prove it his giving me his word. For I told them that I not want not to come back there if the same nonsense be happening, that I not need it.

So the bottom line was, I was becoming more and more tired of it and more and more thought of calling it quits.

On that question I post the last time in this thread, why do eels release their prey when the fish is in its jaws? The answer is rather simple really, for in the eel neck is a ligament and if this was to become damage, the eel could stave to death> So the eel is forced into releasing their possible prey before injury can accur>

You know, for a 69 yr old, you have pretty thin skin.

This is the internet. For everything you say, there's going to be 14 people who disagree with you. It doesn't make you wrong, and it doesn't mean that they know anything about what they're talking about, it's just the way it is.

It shouldn't require you to ask to have your membership revoked, just don't bother posting to those people if you don't want. Stand up, go have a glass of water, watch some tv or your fish swim, rub some sand in it and get back in the game.

And as an aside, your posts are very long, and quite honestly, kind of hard to read. There's a good chance that people aren't even arguing with you, but rather just misread what you were trying to say.

So, buck up lil' camper. It sounds like you have much lore to lend. No need to instantly post drama...get back to what we love...fishie fun filled facts!

I completely agree with you, Blue. For what it's worth, I too found the post in question a bit of an insult on some accounts and think we would all do better if personal judgement calls were left out of their posts. It's one thing to disagree with a poster, it's an entire other thing to provoke a defensive response. We need to all focus on that just because it does or doesn't work on your tank, down't mean the same for the other. And not every poster is as experienced as the other, in fact that's why newbies and others come here in the first place. They seek advice, not to hear only of what's wrong in the tank. Each new member is exactly that, a new member and should be treated as such. Some are not all knowledgable and are here for help with what theybelieve is their unique situation. As for posts which are long and hard to make sense of, that bears nothing on the education or experience of the poster. If anything, it shows that just maybe this poster should be considered to asking questions to instead of completely jumping to a defensive position.... I mean it's obvious that the poster may have a language barrier which is completely ok.
