Help - Am I overgrown with algae or worse?

Excel isn't a fert per se, it is a liquid carbon replacement derived from glutaraldehyde. I think the problem was the fert tabs you were adding to your substrate. The only things I ever use in my planted tanks are Excel and Iron if I see the leaves turning light green. I also use clay balls with liquid ferts added around the roots of heavy feeding plants. I depend on adjustment of the light schedule/water change schedule and fish waste to make up for the rest. I would run the lights 8 hours during the time you are home.
Don't get caught up in all of the dosing ferts stuff that you read. The majority of people who keep that type of tank are going for optimal growth of high light plants. If you are happy just to keep plants alive and a nice looking tank it becomes much simper.

Oh wow. All I have is Excel and apparently that made the problem worse the first time but I think you mean that now that I have the plants, I should resume a fertilization schedule for the plant's sake.

Are you using that much light on top of the room light you might get?

Well I don't get room light no more. The curtains that I have don't allow direct sunlight. And the room light that I have are incandescent bulbs so that doesn't even give enough energy to the plants. Right now I have 108w of T5HO running which puts me in the high range of lighting.

Cynobacteria is bacteria and not algae. I was told once by a member of the MAS in Minnesota that this can be combatted with "Maracyn II". Haven't tried it, but I will as I have a small problem starting in one of my tanks.

Wishing U success also.

You say that all you have is Excel, Excel is not a fert really it is just a corbon substitute. It does nothing for nutrients except to give the plant the energy to process other ferts.

Without other ferts such as nitrogen and pottasium you probably will not get good results from Excel. I would go to Mgamers web site and buy some dry ferts. Hopefully this massage is Mgamer approved. :thm:
