Help! First Fish Disease!

the burnt tail could be a bacterial infection.

usually, any redness is the give away.

if it is just frayed fins, it is finrot, and that is easy to cure usually just by doing some water changes and adding the salt.

normally, meds are not needed for fin rot. just improve the water quality, add salt, and the fish's immune system will do the rest.

Can you get your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates tested?

this will help.

see if you can post a pic of the problem, that will help to.

When he swam under my lighting, I saw a few white spots on top of him. Let me ask you this, if I treat for ich and he doesn't actually have it, can I hurt him?

not generally, unless he reacts strongly to the meds. But anytime you add medications to a tank, you run the risk of upsetting the biofilter.

Would I would do at this point is this:

do a 1/3 water change as normal.

add the salt.

hold off on the medication until we know for sure what we are dealing with.

see if you can post a pic of the fish.

and see if you can get your water tested for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and lets go from there.

Picture coming...stand by.

PICTURES...AS GOOD AS I CAN GET

Can't see any spots on the camera, but it might at least give a look at the burnt tail appearance.

one thing to remember is that blue gouramis are extremely hardy fish.

he stands a good chance of getting through whatever this is.:dance2:

That's why I love my Blues.

Problem, of course, is that I have some NOT so hardy fish in there with him.

I wouldn't worry so much about the colour. Your fish doesn't look out of the ordinary as there of lots of colour variations out there.

some blue gouramis can have orange/reddish colour on the bottom fin, like ths one:

just watch the spots.

Yeah, but you don't see that back fin? It wasn't like that yesterday.

test readings.

ammonia and nitrites zero
nitrates 5-10

So...knowing what you know, give me some instruction for the evening and I'll go about it.

BTW, I really appreciate the help.
