Help! First Fish Disease!

the base of the tail does look a little red. tomorrow (or tonight), do a water change and add some salt.

see if the redness disappears. sometimes, a water change can clear up minor stuff like this, as these are tough little fish.

how big are the white spots that you can see?

The white spots are very small and when he's in the shadows I can't see them, but when he swims under my light, I notice some white spots on top of him. Three or four of them.

ammonia and nitrites zero
nitrates 5-10

So...knowing what you know, give me some instruction for the evening and I'll go about it.

BTW, I really appreciate the help.

no problem.

your water parameters look good.

I would still do a quick water change though and add 1 tablespoon of salt for every 10 gallons.

see how he is tomorrow, and let us know if the spots disappear, or appear on the fins, or on any other fish.

then we will know if it is ich for sure.

it is sounding like ich.

fungus does not usually show up in small spots like that.

go ahead and do the water change, add the salt.

tomorrow, remove the filter insert with the carbon in it and add a half dose of the ich medicine.

a few spots of ich is easy to treat. adding the salt and a bit of medication should stop it from going crazy.

thats the only time that ich can be a real killer: when it plasters the fish.

Well...LOL....Gouramies have white spots on their fins anyway....this could be tougher than I thought!

But, I'm doing as told and I'm doing a water change which will be followed by your prescription for the salt.

I'll do it tomorrow. All Wally World had that didn't have malachite green in it was the little bubbly tablets. I bought enough for 3 or 4 treatments. Tonight I'll do the salt.

good stuff.

maybe hold off on adding any medication or removing the filter insert until you are sure that it is ich.

its not worth messing up the biofilter in the tank if it turns out it was not ich.

Here are some shots of ich, if this helps at all:

you can see that ich is generally very small, pinpoints of white on the fish.

if they are large and blochy spots, that is not ich, and is probably a fungal problem, in which cases the water change and salt should be enough to cure it.

good luck!

I added the salt. Makes the water kinda "spotty", which I kinda expected. How many times should I add the tablespoon per ten gallons?
