Help identifying algae - wierd looking.

I haven't used covers for a looooong time. It's amazing watching them explode under a MH lamp. It would be affecting the light to a degree, get rid of them! I think this deserves a poll....

ok gone ! the only thing they are good for is evaporation reduction and splash/salt deposit reduction.

the cons are greenhouse effect + no airflow to surface. + light has to pass through glass + salt film.

So im going to try it without.

Oh the other thing is... I dont have a sump or refugium. I understand many people are succesfull without a sump, but I figure it can't hurt me at this point to add one (well except my wallet) ~!

I want it to go away !

Remember, easy does it! Patience is something that I learned from marine aquariums, nothing happens quickly, if it does then something might be wrong. It really doesn't seem that bad now. I think your first fish should be some type of sand sifter, like a goby. They are quite hardy and just a pleaser to watch. Just remember you will face challenges like this all the time with this hobby, it can be a little disheartening, but don't give up, you'll have a great tank by the end of it!

Just one other thing, try moving your power heads to the bottom, turn them upside down and get flow more parallel with the substrate.

Looking a bit more closer, are the rocks at the top cleaner? is that because you have cleaned them, or they have more light and flow? try the upside down power head thing.

thats cause all my snails only eat the top of the rock clean. They don't like the side.

OK I think im starting to beat the cyano, (I took the power filter off completly, took the glass hood off, lowered the temp to 76-78 range, dosed with chemi-clean twice, did a 20% h20 change, siphoned as much out as I could, and added a bunch of snails, hermits, and a couple emerald crabs. The cyano is still there, but only a little bit here and there. however now my tank water is murky and green, and the algale growing on the glass has gone from brown to greenish. nitrates still 0 (used 2 different test kits).
