Maybe I should take up the hobby of having kids.
Do plenty of research first. It's not that they're really that hard to keep, but they do require a lot of attention and accessories. They can be quite expensive, actually.
They grow fast, and in fact will outgrow everything - especially clothes and shoes.
A cave or similar hiding place should be provided for a place to sleep and relax.
They tend to be social, and this behavior seems to peak during adolescence. This behavior is rarely actually seen though, as it usually takes place in the cave. The behavior is evidenced, however, by the fact that you can never find the phone.
Mating/pairing habits vary, but especially with males, this frequently involves pleas to let them "borrow the car". It can be a very trying time for the adults.
They must be fed a varied diet, and unlike most fish that you can skip a day of feeding, this is not recommended with kids. It makes them very cranky, and they can become destructive to their environment. Oh yeah, and one feeding a day won't quite do it either. Most experts agree that they should be fed three times a day. As they approach adulthood, the males in particular, will often develop ravenous appetites.
Once they have pair bonded, it is usually long term - often for life. This is desirable, as the breaking up a a pair later in life is quite stressful.
Overall, they can be very rewarding. Patience is the key.
