i have a 55g freshwater tank that has been without a filter for going on 2 days now. my power went out and when it came back on my filter didn't. it's plugged into a surge protector and everything else that is plugged into it works (lights, heater, pump, etc.). the only thing not working is the filter. what is going on? how do i fix it?

Try taking it apart and cleaning the impeller ....sometimes gunk can build up around them and not want to start back when power comes back on ..... After 2 days your good bacteria might be pretty much gone that was built up in it unless it has stayed wet ...then you still should keep an eye out for a mini-cycle if you get it back running and do water changes as needed until it gets balanced back out.

I agree, the motor may be jammed from gunk settling around the impeller: I'd break down the whole filter and clean every part. Meanwhile, prep some water for a water change and be ready to do one every day, since you're likely to go through a cycle.

Good luck! :thm:

What kind of filter.....

i'm sorry, in my panic i forgot to post the brand. it's a biowheel. i cleaned the impeller and when i plugged it in after cleaning it the impeller was working. then i set it back up and nothing. any other ideas?

Is water coming out but the wheel not turning?

I would get a filter on there soon, even if you need to get a new one.......:)
