Help me seting up my 1st planted tank?

Hmm ok thats a problem then. Thanks for catching that Ms.Bubbles

I will look into the Cambomba b4 i place my order

Also if i do go CO2 im Going to do a DIY setup like they explained in the CO2 thread thanks for pointing that out to me jennfier it will save me some cash heh :D

My recomendation is to start with more plants then you think you need--some of those like water sprite are good to keep levels steady and help you outcompete any algae you might get. They grow fast which is what you want at first. You might try some red or green temple as well. A good website for looking up plants is http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/index.php
You can look up by lighting needs and by level of difficulty.

Why should there be a lot of algae? 96 watts over a 40 gallon tank is only 2.4 watts-per-gallon. Hardly enough light to warrant C02 as a necessity.

I've got a tank with 3 watts per gallon and no C02 and have no problems with algae.

PS. Lucas: Cambomba is a pretty light-demanding plant. Not sure that your 96 watts is going to be enough...

The WPG rule does not apply well to NANO tanks. So if your saying your 2.5G has over 3 WPG and no algae without DIY CO2 then WPG don't add up the same way they would for a larger tank so this should be thrown out. Typicaly Nano's need WELL over the typical WPG rule to achieve high growth rates. After all only so much light intensity is emitted with a CF 9 watt light.

I have a 3 gallon eclipse putting that tank over 3WPG as well but it's a regular flourescent and everythign grows every slowly. It has no CO2 as well.

I get algae in all planted tanks without CO2 unless they have low light (heck even my 3 gallon is starting to get some). 2.4 WPG is enough that you should probably use CO2 injection, at least if it is Power Compact WPG, and they have a decent reflector... If your using spiraled PC bulbs, or regular flourescents etc, then 2.4 WPG is not alot of light. It really depends more on the light intensity and how it is distributed. Like I said I would at least dose Excel if no DIY Co2 is available.

This is just my opinion o feel free to try it without CO2 if you want, but be ready for algae. I'm setting up a tank right now with 2.6 WPG and it is going to have Pressurized CO2... I currently have DIY CO2 on my other tanks 20H with 3.2WPG and 10G with 2.8WPG...
