Pretty positive the first fish is a male. The second fish looks like a male as well.

I thought the last 2 pics were the same fish. Both of them look like males. Not much color on the lower gill plate.

ok so went and got a female today. after lots and lots of researching finally can tell the difference. so brought her home and romeved all other dempseys except one male and a pleco and pictus catfish. put the female in and for 20 minutes she layed on her side behind the pump. then as soon as she came down the male saw her and they almost instantly started the mating dance! i cant believe it. it was beautiful. so im hoping to see some eggs soon. thanks all!

MALE?

OK SINCE LAST POST HAVE HAD FEW MISHAPS... SO AFTER WATCHING THE MALE AND FEMALE DANCE AROUND EACH OTHER FOR HOURS THAT NIGHT I WOKE THE NEXT MORNING TO SEE HER BEHIND THE PUMP AGAIN. HE IS CHASING HER OFF NOW. SHE NOW RUNS JUST BY SEEING HIM. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED. I PUT A MIRROR UP TO THE GLASS AND THAT SEEMS TO HELP HE SPENDS MORE TIME CHASING HIMSELF THAN HER NOW.
SO THEN WENT OUT OF TOWN FOR MY MAMAWS FUNERAL. WHEN I CAME HOME I FOUND THAT ON MY 55 GALLON TANK THE HEATER HAD WENT OUT AND MY BOYFRIEND WAS SO NICE TO TURN OFF THE HEAT:swear:..... SO FREEZING COLD TANK AND 3 SICK CATS..... MOVED ALL FISH TO OTHER TANK. WHAT I THOUGHT TO BE 2 MALE DEMPSEYS... TOOK A WEEK TO BUY ANOTHER HEATER. SO WHILE WAITING FOR THE HEATER I NOTICED THAT MY 7 INCH MALE AND ONE OF THE 3 AND A HALF INCH (WHAT I THOUGHT TO BE MALE) ARE INSEPERABLE. THEY SHARE THE SAME CAVE AND SWIM NEXT TO EACH OTHER AND TWITCH. IVE HEARD THAT TWO MALES WILL NOT TOLERATE EACH OTHER. SO HOPING FOR MORE OPINIONS! THANKS ALL!
