help sexing dempseys

OK SO STILL SURE HE IS A HE. IM SO CONFUSED THOUGH. HAVE U EVER SEEN TWO MALES ACT LIKE THIS? IS IT POSSIBLE THEY ARE.... ***? OR WILL THEY START TO FIGHT WHEN THE ONE GETS BIGGER? THEY ARE SO HAPPY TOGETHER RIGHT NOW I DONT WANT TO SEPERATE THEM. BUT I GUESS IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS ILL PUT MR. JILL (THE 7 IN) BACK INTO HIS OWN 55. LAST NIGHT THEY WERE DOING SPINS LOL THE LITTLE ONE KEEPS GENTLY BUMPING THE SIDE OF MR JILL THEY SPIN AROUND AND AROUND EACH OTHER SLOWLY LOL ITS REALLY COOL TO WATCH.

UPDATE.
HAVE DONE LOTS OF SWITCHING AROUND WITH THE FISH TO SEE ANY WOULD PAIR UP. THINK IVE BEEN SUCCESSFULL! THE TWO ARE ALMOST ALWAYS TOGETHER AND HAVE SCOOPED ALMOST ALL THE SAND AND GRAVEL OUT OF A CAVE THAT THEY SHARE. THE FEMALE HAS TURNED ALMOST COMPLETLY BLACK. IM THINKING AFTER ALL THE RESEARCH THAT THOSE ARE HER BREEDING COLORS. STILL NO SIGN OF EGGS BUT STILL HOPING FOR THE BEST! TWO "***" MALES ARE IN THEIR TANK STILL HAPPY AS CAN BE..... THE SMALLER ONE IS DIGGING HIS OWN LITTLE PIT INSIDE THE LOG THAT THEY SHARE. STILL GETTING ALONG FOR NOW BUT KEEPING A GOOD EYE ON THEM.

went to the tanks this morning to feed. female didnt come out only poked her head out. peeked inside the cave and I HAVE EGGS!!! cant really see in and the inside of the fake cave is a pinkish brown so very very hard to see but i see quite a few white ones.... hope some make it!

thanks! been waiting for years to see this. hope things go well. ive read now that im not supposed to have the larger gravel in there because the fry can get stuck. i have half larger gravel and half sand in this tank. so waiting with fingers crossed! now need to find homes for the babies and the other two males.

so this morning was quite dissapointed when i looked in and saw no eggs.... yet she was still guarding the cave... so looked in a different view and saw nothing but sand.... so where did they go. well figured she ate them as ive heard that new parents may do this. so went and got the flashlight and peeked in and wait.... the sand is wiggleing. its not sand lol its the eggs they are hatching guess they have been there longer than i thought. yay so far so good.... was hoping they would move them to the large pit near the front glass that she has been working on so that i can see them better and take pics. maybe tomorrow.

Very cool, good luck with the babies.

This is the first fish species that I actually TRIED to breed. Convict Cichilds don't count. :D

Congrats. I had my red devil and midas breed a couple of years ago. We were not trying to breed but it happened. It was great the first time. After they laid eggs a second time a month later, I have to say that I was happy that the other fish in the tank found them because I still had over a hundred to get rid of from the last bunch. I still have 2 left. The others either died or I gave them away. I'm hoping in a couple of months I'll be able to put the one in the parents tank.
