I have a new 125 gallon tank, just wanted to know what would be a good filtration and suggestions on what fish to put in there. i currently have 3 tanks. a 7 gallon with fancy guppies, a 35 gallon with various goldfish, and a 55 with south americans, i would like it to be fresh water tank and not too planted. any suggestions would be helpful.

I'd put the goldfish in the 125 and then use the 35 for something else, maybe an Asian fish setup.
125 gallon Cichlid tank would be good. Nice sized tank.
I agree that the goldfish will outgrow a 35 gallon tank.

Clown loaches a good idea, but i had bad experiences with them dying on me.
oscars are a bit too messy for me.
Jack demseys are not to bad..i like that .

Personally I'd never fill a 125 with goldfish. If its the kind that only get to 5-6 inches long then I think the 35 would do fine assuming it wasn't over stocked. When you're talking a tank that big, it usually means aggressive fish, so look into them, jags, red devils, jacks etc. This in turn usually means cichlids, catfish, sharks. Off the top of my head I can't think of any 'big' fish that won't eat other small fish, much beyond plecos and the sort.
As for filteration... maybe a couple of canisters?? That would be my logical suggestion. I've never had a tank that big, and I don't yet own a canister filter, buts it's where I would start to look.

well those are good suggestions, i have a aquaclear500 ready to set up in the 125, i might buy another one of those, ...canisters , i am a bit wary about them. I hear its a painful task of cleaning and maintaining.
Is anyone out there with canister filters offer help on this matter?

i was thinking of getting a small redtail catfish, and letting it grow to its potential.
also looking into a wimple ( high fin shark)

Cannisters like most filters are as maintenance intensive as you allow them to be. A little bit of thought and maybe some DIY and you can make your life pretty easy with a cannister. The same could be said for HOB's, sumps, ugf's, etc. One Ac 500 won't be enoguh really in a tank that size. the question that needs to be answered is would you rather have two different filters, or two identicle.
As far as big fish, 125 would make a nice goldie tank if you like goldie's. It would also as mentioned make a nice cichlid tank. There really isn't a lot that a 125 wouldn't house nicely until you get into mammoth cichlids, or big cats/sharks.
If you want a fairly nice fish that gets big and looks good, the green severum comes to mind in the world of cichlids.
Dempseys are awesome, but if you think an Oscars is too messy you probably won't appreciate a dempsey much either. not as messy as an Oscar but definately in the same league.

Well, If I had a 125 gal I would build a sump for it. A trickle area for bio filltration, you can put your heater(s) in it to hide em, ect. This is just me, and I like to play with things and try new things out. As for fish, I would think that you can get *most* anything, as long as you stick to compatible fish. Maybe you could try a biotope type tank? Say, an amazon basin type tank or maybe a brackish tank.. I would think it would be fun to do the research on what grows in a specific river or lake and then stock acccordingly.
Oooh... maybe a discus tank? (depends on how much money and time you have) You could try to breed em and sell the young to a LFS.
