I have an xp1 that I recently purchased used. The hoses had been replaced with braided vinyl and the filstar xp1 motor housing had been placed on a filstar 2 body so that it has two media baskets. This filter appeared to work fine until I noticed that it was leaking from where the power cord comes out of the top. Apon further isnpection, I found that a o-ring that fits the media basket housing to the impeller assembly was missing a small piece. I have read that this can cause water to bypass the media basket, but not flood the top casing causing it to leak near the power cord. I read that two things cause the leaking next to the cord. Undue stress on the hoses or them being streched. That or the filter being 55" or more below the tank.

This is the first one of these filters I have owned. From the rampant descriptions out there, have any of you found that a damaged o-ring to the impeller housing can flood the lid? or is that all about my retrofit hosing?

Thanks in advance

Yea I read that already.......

I got some sillicone lubricant from HD and that seems to have slowed the leak on the o rings on the quick connect so I think that may be causing the leak. The question I have now is, is the o ring to the impeller housing really an o ring or does it have a break in it? My o ring does not go all the way around and I just wanted to know if that is normal. I was searching online to buy one(cant find one local) and it appears it isnt.

Can someone confirm this and when installed how big the gap is supposed to be?

http://www.planetrena.com/Filstar-Rena-Parts.html and regarding the impeller seal, Rena says "This is the seal on the bottom of the motor that prevents water from the aquarium bypassing the filter material. It is a strip of sealing material that fits in the groove on the bottom of the motor. Generally, this does not need replacing and will not solve any leaking problems. Replace when worn or there is a large gap between the ends."
