Help with stocking a 540 gallon tank?

i would want all kinds of things. i would definitely do a sand bottom in something that big.

i'd keep just about every small plec i could get my hands on. then farlowella, a hillstream loach or 5 and a school or 3 of cories. to round out my bottom feeders i'd put in every shrimp i could red nose, rcs, crs, amanos, etc. for the middle and top i'd go with strictly schoolers for the most part and go from there. probably do a trio of guppies for live bearers.

Definitely drop the balas if you are having discus in there.....

I'm all for a big tank with small fish, but a 540 is a bigt larger than 'big' and seems like it should have something that actually merits the space. I had that space, I would be looking at something large and full of personality like arrowanas and pacus, etc. I don't even know all the 'big fish' options because i've never been able to entertain the idea!

:iagree: except I'm pretty much: BIG tank = BIG fish... lol

I'd do some sort of large centerpiece or a school of something a bit larger.

I think up need to up the schools of all your smaller fish. You could easily have 100 of each tetra, and 100 cory.I think if you go with less than that, you will never see them.I would get 50 to 75 oto too.
I would leave the bala out.
I would get a flagtail.
I would also get some BN plecos.
Oh,and a single male Beta. ;)

Wow that is going to be an awesome tank! I'm not sure about putting barbs with angel fish ... did once years ago having being told ruby barbs would be OK and had to take them out a week later as they started fin nipping the angels. Hope you have fun deciding what to get :o)

I'm curious what temperature you plan on keeping the water if you're keeping both Discus and Panda Cory in the same tank?

Panda's like mid 70s if I recall correctly- and Discus like the mid 80s- I think that would present a bit of a problem.

They'd probably both "survive" at 80F- but I don't know if either species would truly be happy at that.
