Hi Everybody
I've got an empty 8 foot tank that i would like to turn into a community marine tank with fish and invertibrates. I've also been given sooooo much conflicting infomation as well as far to many choices as to what corals and fish to stock. Can someone please give me a sample livestock list suitable for a big tank. Any suggestions on set up would be greatly recieved.
Thanks

Well, I guess it all really depends on what you want to have! There are so many options with a tank that size. Do you know how many gallons it holds? Are you interested in peaceful or aggressive fish? Since you said corals, do you want a reef tank?

Personally with a tank that size, I'd make a peaceful community reef tank with reef-safe fishes, invertebrates and corals. But that would be my preference.

hi there, thanks for the reply. I would like a large peaceful community aquarium with many different corals as you suggested but i'm struggling to figure out what is easy to keep and also what species are compatable. What would you suggest to stock the tank with.
Sorry to here about the mantis shrimp

Alright! At least now we know what direction you want to go in. Are there any fish you really like the look of? That's a good starting spot. I suggest you check out some on the on-line stores and just browse through the fish. I'll put links at the bottom. That's what I did to find the fish I wanted, but I'm going to order them through my local LFS when I'm ready for them.

As for fish that would work ...
-some clownfish, but many of the species don't like being mixed with other species of clowfish
-cardinalfish
-chromis (can be a problem with clownfish cuz they are part of the damsel family)
-gobies
-blennies
-reef safe wrasses
-dartfish (if a very peaceful tank)
-Jawfish (DSB is a must)
-regal tang and maybe a yellow tang (I'd definitely put a tang in a tank that size, but they'd go in last.)
-maybe a dwarf angelfish (also semi-aggressive but you have a lot of space)

It's a good idea to pick the fish you'd like and then ask on this forum if they'll be good together! Originally I wanted clownfish, damsels, and chromis all in my 45 gal tank! That would've been a disaster.

It's a good idea to pick the species you want and then try to design your tank around it.

As for corals, I have a frogspawn and some button corals that were given to me. Both have been easy and are thriving for me in my 4+ month tank. I think mushrooms are good beginner corals, but I don't have much coral experience! You may want to check out the reef aquarium section of this forum and see what they say. I got my starter corals my joining my local reef club. They propagate corals and trade with eachother. It's a good way to get a lot of different species.

Here are those links so you can see all the fish that are out there:

I've been told that they run on the low side for aquarium size, but that shouldn't be a problem with a 220 gal tank (I'm suffering from tank envy.)
