highway robbery.....a rant

Yeah, well, its the same thing with buying substrate from a pet store. A little bitty bag of river rock for 2.99 at LFS, compared to 50 lbs for 4.99 at a home Improvement store. OR free at the local gravel pit. No brainer. lol

You could try to find some at a local fish club auction.

jodi-

I had a similar problem with driftwood leaching tanins. I just put my driftwood in a big pot and boiled it for a few hours (changing the water as it got filled with the tanins) now I have no more problems.

Just a thought. :D

I don't have a pot big enough for this peice. When I first got it, I put it in a pot with the extra hanging out and boiled for about 20 mins, then turned it and boiled it some more. Maybe I will take it out and boil it again, since I have those dang water fleas infesting it anyway. I don't think all the water changes in the world will get rid of those things.

yeah, my father once had an infestation in one of his goldie tanks. man, he had to clean it completely with bleach twice to get them to leave! :)

I have completely emptied the tank and changed the substrate from gravel to sand and I still have them. I cant treat with a parasite med bc I have snails in the tank. So.....I guess I just step up the water changes and hope for the best.

First, it is a hardwood bogwood, not a driftwood...secondly, it is big and heavy, and needs to be shipped over from Malaysia, then cleaned and dried for sale....plus standard petshop markup on dry goods is 100%. Now you may better understand the pricing...and by the by, you paid a pretty typical price.

Well, now that I don't feel like I'd be getting ripped off, I will go back and purchase a nice piece of that Malyasian bogwood. It's so beautiful, and has such a nice, rich color. The grapevine I bought for the 5 gal. looks very nice, I boiled it for 3 hours, then let it sit overnight, and there's no problem with it floating, it stays right in place. :)

see if you can switch tags.. i've gotten some pretty big pieces of malaysian driftwood for 9.99 by "accident".
