Hillstream tank

Very nice! Congrats on the sewellia babies. I have a male and female sewellia spending a lot of time together and now she has disappeared. Hopefully they spawned. I also have two gastromyzon species. As near as I can tell they are G. scitulus and G. zebrinus.

Thanks! I try my best.

My 4 females do not like the male. He's always the one chasing after them as he has his pick of four different females to spawn with. They breed at least twice a week but a lot of the eggs end up being eaten. The gastromyzons actually came mixed in with some G. ctenocephalus as importers I've talked to say that the collectors collect different ones from the same river/area and ship them all as "river loaches" or borneo suckers. The LFS I went to has them listed as "river loaches" but I knew how the G. ocellatus ones looked like.

Here's a video on three different spawnings by the same male and female (was uploaded over a month ago when I upgraded the tank). Their eggs get sucked into the canisters, end up on the sand, hair algae, or eaten by the parents as they like to shift through the sand. Not sure how long it takes for the eggs to hatch but fry usually appear in my Repashy dish around 3 days from spawning date.

10/20/12 Tank update

Taken a month ago:

Now, after moving most of the rocks to catch a fish:

I decided to get rid of the vals. Still have some very small ones but majority are gone. I decided to add and move around some rocks as I was trying to catch a goby. I like the present scape but may take out the crypts once I add a new Aquaclear 70 powerhead, as they might get uprooted. Finding a lot of fry in the main tank and also in the grow out tank. There's about 5 or so in the grow out as I put the hair algae from this tank into there which usually contains eggs.

*Ah, heading is totally wrong :). It was meant to say "10/12/2012"

Not much to update. Going to check out my LFS on Black Friday to see what they have for sale. I'm hoping for a 75g for $200 with stand as they had in the past. Probably go to Petco or Petsmart for filters or equipment like powerheads. Not looking for fish unless my LFS gets in hillstream fish that are interesting. Finally cleaned the tank of some algae. I was busy with school projects so I didn't have time to clean except feed and change the water. I'll need to clean out the canisters next WC to see if there are any babies in there. Still have about 10 juveniles in the parents' tank.

Just a quick photo of two females plus a juvenile sewellia lineolata and a gastromyzon (I'm thinking it's a female from the shape):

Thanks for sharing, Sho. My lineolatas have spawned in the 125. I found a baby with black and white markings saturday and haven't seen him since. I have Rhinos in the tank so he may have been eaten. I'm gonna put some river gravel in the tank in a few places to try to give more hiding places to little ones.

Thanks! Your tank is quite lovely too:). I'm still trying to figure out if I want to keep my 40g or upgrade to a bigger tank, preferably a 120g as I love your 125g tank.

My group seem to spawn every week which creates chaos in the tank with the juvenile sewellias as they love eating the eggs. Always make sure to check your canister filters for fry. I find fry/juveniles in my canisters when I clean them.

I was going to add some rhinogobius to eat the eggs but felt too bad if the rhinogobius ends up eating a fry so I decided to add some panda garras to eat the eggs. I'm actually waiting to get the pandas from James next week, if it works out. I will not have time to ship the offspring next semester, with work and being a full time student, so will have to control the sewellia spawning. I won't feel too bad if the pandas eat the eggs. Better than seeing the fry get munched on which I would be quite sad to see.

Got the panda garras from James today. I thought it would get delayed for the holiday and was a little scared. Glad they didn't get delayed in the mail. What cuties! When I was acclimating the pandas, they were trying to escape. They're now in my qt tank. So far, very good with their colors. Probably hungry but all looks to be well. Here are two photos and a video during acclimation, showing how they tried escaping the container:

You can see two out of the water and one going to climb up:

I also got my powerhead but it doesn't look like it will stay on the glass. Maybe there is too much algae on the glass...

The Great Escape! Nice fishies!

Cute garras! I had 1 that climbed out of the water every water change. He liked the power head flow where it hit the glass. He never went quite to the rim but I had to keep an eye on him.

Thanks! I had to watch the acclimation container as I didn't want the fish to climb out. Hopefully the rim keeps them inside the tank. I fed some bloodworms and will try some Repashy tomorrow. I'll try to get a video or photos in the qt when I am not busy. The new powerhead won't attached to the algae covered glass so I will have to scrub off some algae so the suction cups will stay. Probably work on the tank tomorrow morning as I have to send out some juveniles on Monday.
