hitchhiker snail ID

Looks like pouch/bladder snails to me. These guys do eat my sags, though a few probably can't do much harm.

Are pond snails the same as pouch snails?

No, they look similar, but they're two different families.

they're live food for assassin snails :)

Do a lot of assassin keepers use bladder snails as feeders? Mine only seems to be able to catch them on rare occasions, given the incredible speed difference between the two.

mine actually prefer ramshorns first and foremost. If I do provide pouch or pond snails I crush them first. I just wanna keep the assassin tank with rams and assassins only, don't ask me why :)

I go through the saaaame thing lupes! I either get uptight managers who refuse to give me pest snails (mostly because they don't know what they are even as I'm pointing at them) or I get weird looks from employees who are grateful: *shrug* "The more you take, the less we have to worry about" :D

I went to a LFS near hear, just looking, but they had a whole row of tanks infested with MTS. I'd been wanting some for the sand substrate, so I asked if I could have some:

me: You know those snails in those tanks over there? Would it be okay if I have some?
LFS worker: You mean the d**m nuisance snails? Why would you want those?

That's what they knew them as, d**m nuisance snails. As the worker was getting some, I said something about malaysian trumpet snails, and she had no idea what I was talking about.

at least she was willing to give them to you, I've had some manager types fire off some excuse about liability and refusing me any.

She did give a firm warning: "You know these things will take over your tank, right?"

The pic looks identical to some small snails that turned up last year with some live plants. They established a thriving population in my 38, mainly living on/among the floating hornwort tangle, but certainly did no harm. Mine are less than 1/2", closer to 1/4". Oddly enough, the population seems to have declined over the last few months. They were much more plentiful, now I only see a few among the duckweed when I thin it out. I have to wonder whether the addition of the L129's to the tank affected their numbers. Possibly competition for algae...

If you're not overfeeding the tank, their population probably declined naturally.
