HMMM growing out in a dam? possible???

Hey,
I live in queensland, 4 hours from brisbane on the coast, no its stays relatively warm all the time, Would it take long for the fish to start growing to decent sizes?
Thanks
Andru

Since Brisbane is on the coast, I am reading your description to say that you are "four hours north of Brisbane, on the coast." That would put you around Gladstone, as opposed to due west, towards someplace like St. George.

That's an important distinction, because along the coast the ocean will moderate both the high and low temperatures, whereas inland it would likely get too hot in the summer and too cold at night in the winter.

Please feel free to correct if my assumptions are incorrect.

In any case, you should see significant growth within the first year. If the fish can survive in the pond overwinter (I realize it's the height of summer for you right now), you should eventually have some spectacular specimens. How big is the pond, anyway?

Over at aquamojo.com, in the photo section, someone posted a picture of a Green Terror he caught from a large pond system in Hawaii. Look at that and compare it to the photos of "normal" tank-raised GT's to get an idea of what kind of extra-special growth you are going to see out of this.

Your pond might run out of guppies and pollywogs, however. Hope you have a lot of insect life where you live, too.

I think this is the fish you are referring:

Hi,
Yes where up around gladstone area, the pond is fairly big its around 2m metres deep, 5m long x 5m width, a big square, but we can easily drag and cast net it, it does have alot of insect lfie in it and it also has some crayfish in it, it does have some lily paps in it but not much but there is some hollow logs and stuff in there and a low bank on one side with tree roots to hide in, would the growth produce any domminant males in the dam?

thats one nice looking fish i hope i can expect growth like that,

I am curious myself, but you said it rains often, and isn't that suppossed to soften water, how do you keep it at a cichlid's standerd of high? wouldn't the tadpole eat fish? also just an idea, but as far as the rain thing goes, you could put cories or neons in there and they could be triggered into breeding quit easily.
