Housing Skirt Tetras

Not sure what you are asking. What do you mean by "What if I put, say, three or so more tetras in the bigger tank"? Which bigger tank? What tetras?

I meant the aforementioned 10g in my original post. As for the tetras, I was talking about the one glo that I have and the others I plan on getting.

Sorry for the confusion!

So, uh... I guess that's a "no", then?

Sorry, I am still unsure what you are asking. Are you asking to put more tetras in the 10gal. or are you planning on a 20gal

Oh, shoot, I get what you're saying. Sorry about that!

So I have this one glo tetra that I got from a relative currently housed in the 2g that I got him in. I got to reading, and found out that (again, this little guy wasn't my fish, but he ended up in my care after my relative didn't want him) skirt tetras are a schooling fish. I read on several different sources that the bare minimum for these guys was a school of 5 in a 10g. Again, though, pretty much everybody says something different.

Well, after reading fishorama's posts and several other articles on skirt tetra behavior, I got worried that they would end up killing each other if the tank was too small. I absolutely would get a bigger tank if I could, but I don't have the space or the money at the moment. However, I know that something needs to be done about the one fish I have, because it's unhealthy for a schooling fish to be living in solitude, I'd guess.

So now, I have the one 2g in which the only tetra I have now resides, and the 10g I bought in an attempt to set up a bigger, more comfortable home for him. I know that any more than 5 2-inch fish in one 10g is pushing it (heck, that's probably pushing it), so I was wondering if it was at all possible for me to understock the tank, yet still have the fish comfortable enough to not be so skittish, and have others of their kind to interact with. What are your thoughts?

Thanks, and sorry for the confusion!

Oh,OK-Got it. Move the glow fish into the 10gal, and get him some friends. 6+ is about al that will fit in the 10. I am also assuming that the glow fish is the long slim ones too.

Skirts, Glow Skirts, Black Tetras, are all the same fish. They do grow big, and a 20gal long is the minimum for them, and yes--they need to be in a group.

Any of the schooling fish do best in big numbers. 5-6 is the minimum, more is even better.

Alright, gotcha. Thanks for the advice. My apologies again for the confusion.

I suppose I could always house them as juveniles in this 10g and upgrade to a 20g when the time comes. I guess I'll just see how everything works out.

Properly fed black skirts will grow fast. Will out-grow the 10gal in a few months.
