pretty soon i'm going to have to remove about 5 golden shiners from my tank because i have too many, and i need to make some room for a few new fish.

i've tried already to catch these things with a net and they're too quick!

whats the best way to get them out of the tank?

I don't know that there is a really *easy* way, but I find removing the decorations, then lowering the water level (a lot) is usually what I end up resorting to. Plus then you get a nice big water change done :)

turn the light off for about 1 hour and when they are sleeping catch them!!! that is how i moved my zebra danios!!! and they are hard to catch!!!

i have never seen my fish sleep. i come down in the middle of the night with a red light sometimes to see if my crawfish is active, and the golden shiners are still just swimming around.

Try catching them while they are feeding?

I had the same issue recently, and ended up using Rinmouse's suggestion (but I needed to drain the tank anyways). Is your tank big enough to hold a minnow trap? That usually does the trick.

I put a big net into the tank and let it sit for a while so the fish get used to it. Then I use a smaller net and try to herd them into the large one. It's still a pain to catch those fast fish!

i decided to lower the water about 50%, and i took out the biggest decorations, and i managed to get the 5 that needed to be removed out with a net.
