Hi,
I 'm setting up a new refugium (along with a new tank LR). Will good algae appear out of thin air? or buy from LFS?

Same question for pod and all those good critters, how do I "seed" them?

Right now my refugium looks like the surface of the Moon. LOL.

A good place to start is looking for a local reef club. Someone there may be able to help you out with start of chaeto or similar and with any luck you'll get some 'pods with it. In my case, I'm in a rural area so I had no choice but to go online. I actually got my chaeto from e-bay. I also ended up buying a starter culture of 'pods. The pods came from http://www.oceanpods.com.

Hope this helps.

nope, it won't appear out of thin air unless you had tiny algae particles in the tank somehow that you just couldn't see. you have to introduce it into the tank. umbra had some great suggestions.

Many good fish stores will sell macro, and you can usually get something like a bottle of tigerpods, or go to the site mentioned above...

Reef clubs ARE the best, though...

Thanks, your replies cleared it up for me. Another excuse for me to go LFS shopping, YIPPEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I got my hair algae on some live rock, then it started growing on the glass, sand, and powerheads.

If hair algae good to have? or is it something that makes you pull your hair out? (ok, bad punt, but I can't help myself.)

Well, it exports nutrients, just like any other algae. But that's about the best you're going to get out of me on that one.
