How do you acclimate or not? Why?

How do you acclimate your new fish?

Do you do anything to eliminate/detoxify the ammonia in the bag?

Actually, I've never thought about that before.

But I don't think it's ever been a problem, either.

I drip acclimate. not for as long as most people suggest but i do it. i basically just run water through some airline into a bucket of the fish in their original water for about 30min.

I just temperature acclimate.

I get my fish from a nearby town that has water from a similar source, so I figure pH and hardness etc are going to be similar.

If your fish have come for 1,000 miles away, then you may need to be more careful of course.

The last fish I bought was a baby Oscar, about 11 months ago. I carefully floated his bag in the tank, for about 2 mins. When I turned my back he threw a fit, knocked the bag over and swam out. He was obviously stressed as he was hand feeding the next day. He still has the same attitude today, just he's not a baby any more.

Great post, a lot of info and only really 3 ways to acclimate, how do we prove what works best?

You don't. Different methods work in different circumstances.

For instance, in my case acclimation is a precaution instead of a requirement (even with saltwater, although I'm not entirely willing to test that theory with how much half of them cost ). That may not necessarily be true of someone else though.

It depends. If the animals have been in the bag for a long time, I typically just drop them in the tank because I worry like that. If it hasn't been a long time, I pour them with some of the bag water into a container and add about the same amount of water from the tank they'll be going into. After a while, I net them out and put them in the tank. It's worked for me. I can't say I've ever had any losses from just dropping them into the tank right away though.

Temp. is all that concerns me. I keep tough fish cuz I have many power outtages. I havent checked my PH in like over 3yrs. (after I added tons of wood&leaves) lots of live plants, wood and leaves keep my PH just right for my jungle fish. I "plop" them when moving fish around in my own tanks and float abit contaminated petstore fish and net them.
