How do you acclimate or not? Why?

How do you acclimate your new fish?

I usually float the bag but prick lots of tiny holes with a pin. Due to any diffusion gradient (whether it's pH or hardness or temperature) it will always form equilibrium. Exactly like the cells in our bodies...

Sorry I forgot to mentio I half fill a bucket with tank water to do that so I don't get the LFS water in my tanks..

I plop and drop for the same reasons you do Rach. Only time I float is if there's a huge temperature difference between the bag and the tank water.

depends.. if water conditions are similar and fresh water species.. Plop and drop..

marine.. drip acclimation btw, interesting info in this thread

I use a TDS meter & almost always slow acclimate fish over at least an hour. My water is usually much lower TDS than others. If it's a huge difference, I also raise the TDS of my QT to closer match the bag. As Bob pointed out a few hours won't prevent osmotic shock if there's a big difference. I guess, with no real knowledge, a difference of ~200ppm, I drip: more, I alter the QT params too.

People & lfs that use salt are are a real PITA as it adds a lot of TDS but it's not something I test for like GH & KH or use much of to raise QT TDS unless I ask if salt has been used. I also slowly remove salt if I've used it as a medication over a period of a couple weeks, just as I slowly lower TDS in QT if I needed to raise it.

I too add a drop of Prime to neutralize any ammonia.

For moving fish or inverts tank to tank, plop 'em in unless there's some major difference in TDS. Lower to higher TDS is less of a problem for fish than higher to lower.

I plop and drop on all my fish except my rams and discus.

After almost losing my first two apistos I'll be temperature matching and dropping them in from now on.

The females was on her way out for days after I used a long acclimation which from what I've been told burned their gills. She went through bouts of swimming upside down and I was close to euthanization for both when the male started doing the same.

But they pulled through. I have another Borellii female coming on friday and it'll be plop and drop once the temp is matched.

First of all, I dump some of the water out of the bag into the sink, then I float the bag in the tank for about 10 or 15min., then I gradually add a little tank water into the bag and then net them and slowly place them in the tank. Takes about 20/25 minutes tops.

This is very interesting!

In the past I used to just float the bags. Now I do a fast drip acclimation most of the time. Maybe next time I get some fish I will try out msjinkzd's technique.
