Well, I know it's been said at least once in this thread, but: in my school during those years, no one that I know of was ever made fun of for their glasses. Maybe because they're so common. I never even thought twice about kids with glasses....
How do you convince an 11yo boy glasses are cool??

Thank you all for the great suggestion. I am trying to make it a non issue. He mentioned it maybe once since then and I just listened to him. He really is concerned and thinks he will be teased. I just told him if that is the best they can come up with to tease you your doing pretty good. LOL.
I think getting to keep them on his face will be the challenge.
Oh..yes they are flexible kid friendly frames with scratch resistant, non reflective, shatterproof lenses. We have really great vision insurance so I can't complain. The frames are waranteed for 2 years with a one time replacement, the lenses the same with a two time replacement. He is an incredibly active boy so I imagine he will be pretty rough on them.

I'm sorry, I read this thread after everyone has already offered so many good suggestions, so I don't really have anything new to suggest. I started out farsighted and got glasses when I was five. Now I'm twenty-six and nearsighted.

I feel bad for saying this, but glasses are not cool and never will be. I have been wearing them since age 5, and got teased constantly until about age 14. After that Things settled down, and then my Father in his infinite wisdom bought me some rec specs to make sports easier. So then the teasing started all over agian, and stayed until I was out of college. In Reality, my Father did the right thing with the rec specs but it was not easy to tolerate.
Contacts were not an option initially because my astigmatism was too bad, and then when contacts became more flexable the price was outlandish. Now the only contacts available that would work in my eyes are 2-3 times the cost of glasses. So I still wear glasses.
I have spent all but 5 years of my life dreaming about a new surgery that would eliminate the need for eye-glasses. LASIK was developed, and of course I am not a candidate. So I get to keep wearing these stupid Glasses until I die I guess.
My advice is to counsel your son on how to live with/ignore the teasing, and council him on the importance of being able to see. Hopefully in this day and age where bullying has been decreased and kids are at least a little more sensative to others feeling he will be fine. Girls are of course the primary concern for most 11 year old, so hopefully he'll figure out that the glasses will have little to no effect on how Girls view him.

Thanks, Nursie. My two year old calls that his " yee-haw hat ". He was only a year old when he got his glasses so hopefully he will be used to them by the time school starts and we won't have these issues. MKML, I think that as long as you explain that you realize he's unhappy about wearing them but that he must wear them to see better, hopefully he will understand. Also, are there any other kids in his class that have to wear glasses? If there are, that may help too. When I was in school, I don't remember anyone with glasses getting teased after about the third grade, so hopefully he won't encounter any of that.
well for me i had to wear glasses but i never used to as i didnt think they were cool but as i did not wear them my eye sight got better as your eyes just had to live with it well mine did
well this depends how bad they are mine are fine now i can read the last line of the board thing they have before tho i could only read the fourth line down.

Wow, Dave...your experience was extreme. Shame on whoever made you miserable. I got glasses in first grade, so probably was 6. I don't remember being teased for wearing glasses (there were other issues tho), but I'm a girl, maybe that made the difference. I too have astigmatism, so contacts weren't really an option, but I never pushed it becasue of the put-your-fingers-in-your-eyes thing. Since the astigmatism contacts have been available...I haven't really cared. As long as I can have my prescription sunglasses I'm good.daveedka said:
Fortunately for me...my problem is nearsightedness, with some astigmatism. As I get older..the changes that make "normal" eyes farsighted are in effect negating my nearsightedness to some extent, at least enough to get my drivers license without glasses. I fear it will over correct..I'm starting to have trouble with really small print...
