how do you make french toast??

My dad raised me to be a french toast purist..if I want sweet, I'll make pancakes or cinnamon rolls, none of those sickly spices go on my egg-fried bread! We scramble a couple eggs with some milk, dip the bread (that chewy sourdough type works great for this), fry in some real butter til golden-brown, then eat with butter, salt and pepper on top :D. Deee-lish! And has the added advantage of being portable sans plate.

thanks a lot guys, we didn't have vanilla so i just whisked eggs and milk, dipped the bread, then cooked and coated with powdered sugar. ill have to try all of these, but i think tomorrow ill be making some kinda toast bacon and egg sandwich, any condiment ideas besides maple syrup. i like maple syrup but not on eggs or bacon, and my friend used to put it on hashbrowns :swear:

and yes, i do know that aunt j and miss butterworth isnt maple syrup, just a sap flavored sugar solution, so dont give me no sass bout tat

How about a twist? A cup of pancake mix, 2 eggs and one cup of milk(then add more to get a wattery batter). Heat up a deep fryer or one inch deep oil in a pan. Then fry till golden on each side. Serve however you want, salt, pepper, butter, syrup, beer, cheeze, tandori sauce. But its best with peanut butter.

There are way too many ways to make French toast for me to believe that you don't know how to make it, haha. To change the level of style, change the bread. Crappy white bread works fine, but if you wanna kick it up a notch and make it gourmet, use a croissant or a nice french baguette.

If you want to vary the flavor, change everything else. Always use the basic egg coating, dont use milk and they will be firmer and hold up to cutting better without flattening. Instead of syrup all the time, try something else. Melt some jelly/jam/preserves in a coffee cup in the microwave then pour that on top for some nice fruit and an awesome pop. Dust with some confectioners sugar for a nice presentation, and if you use syrup, put the cinnamon on the bread, not in to mixture of eggs. It will brown better, hold its flavor better, and makes the toast way prettier.
