How do you make your footprint lighter?

if people don't recycle maybe they will have to shoot all their garbage into space and watch a "tomato can eclipse"...

A simple fact to also consider is when you have Mars heating up some,
along with the Earth heating a bit, you have to re-think Al's buzz phrase "carbon footprint."

________

This actually worries me more then GW. If Mars is also heating up then its because the Sun is getting hotter. That means we might only have 1 billion more years till the Sun supernovas and wipes us all off the planet.

But in the 1 billion years its going to take, how many degrees will the Earth end up warming up from the Sun as it expands towards the Super Nova? Will we become the new Venus?

i think global warming is just something scientest made up to scare us...look at this years winter it was snowing just one month ago in ohio...

Does anyone remember the Y2K scare?

I haven't read all of this thread, but I really had to say something. There have been many misconceptions spread on the internet on global warming. One is that we are coming out of an ice age, which is NOT true. We are supposed to be going into a period of global cooling. I have friends at Columbia and Duke who are studying for their masters in this, and I myself am studying biophysics.
Two is the the main reason we are concerned is that the polar ice caps will melt. Yes, that would probably screw some things, but water expands with increased temperature. This is why we are concerned about flooding.
Three, global warming is an inaccurate term. It is global climate change that we are concerned about. My pond froze over in the san fernando valley last year. The temperature there has never hit bellow 50. Never, ever, ever, it usually reaches above the 90s in the summer. I turned up the heat-what could the animals do? I broke the ice on the pond with my bare hands.
In New Zealand waters in the past 5 years 7 cephalopods have gone extinct. In California many species are bordering on extinction because of introduced species. The chytrid fungus has wiped out entire populations of frogs due to the relocation of the African Clawed frogs. Even humans in cities have much higher rates of asthma. These issues are NOT discussed in the media, though they are in scientific publications. And these are not even the most serious issues.
I agree-the cockroaches will survive. Mass extinction is nothing new to this planet. But does that mean we should encourage it? Does that mean that we should disrupt and destroy so many things until nothing and nobody can hold on anymore?
I've been to the rainforest-My mother is from Trinidad, where many, if not most, common plecoes are collected and the guppy was discovered. The island is rich, the people are poor, and don't know what they're doing. Most, if not all, of the rivers are polluted now, and you can't go onto the beaches with crushed coral anymore.
And how are all those nutrients we use en masse every year supposed to get back into the ecosystem? Magic? If you're telling me ozone doesn't stunt plant life, come live in LA. Where it gets hotter every year in the summer (we've had three consecutive summers with heat records, I believe, unsure on that one, but the last one was definetly a record) and then the pond froze over in the winter! Yay!

Edit: The sun is not expanding, not by a longshot, LOL.

Edit Edit: Ethanol contains less energy that gasoline, so it is worse
While we're ranting about the Tropics, the coral reefs that my parents toured on their honeymoon are completely gone. I'm also suprised nobody here has mentioned trench-trawling or slash-and-burning.

kuhlis comment about the tomato can eclipse was funny. schizo..whats trench-trawling and slash-and-burning? or do i not want to know?.. ignorance is bliss, right? jk.. tell me. and thanks for taking the time to write that, im really learning from this thread lol.
and i remember the y2k scare, but i was never scared.. global climate change is different.

Part of the reason that Y2K didn't happen was people acting before it did.

That and programmers have more h@XX0R skillz!!!111 than they realize.

Sorry, lol. I was never scared either. I don't buy into conspiracy theories.

Many of our waters are so overfished that they no longer turn up a good catch. The fishing industry, to compensate for this, now resorts to trailing huge weighed-down nets along the ocean floor where possible. This, not surprisingly, destroys everything in its path and leaves the bottom completely barren, and most things that are not what they want to catch usually die along with the rest of the fish.

Slash and burn is a farming technique where the forest is burned away to grow crops. Unfortunately, legumes are not planted, and so the soil goes barren in a year or two. And so they have to cut deeper into the jungle to farm more. However, the soil is still barren when they leave it. This is prevalent in South America and Africa, where our rainforests are, not only where most of the biodiversity in the world is, but which produce a stunning amount of oxygen. Regardless of any statistics it is doing devastating damage.

all of this is a tick of time in relation to the earth.

I personally suspect that Humans will not last as long as dinosaurs..

top of the food chain...lol

when the youknowwhat hits the fans..it'll be insects like cockroaches, that survive.
what is really at the top of the food chain..?

I was one of the lucky folks who got to see a near miss...it was like something out of a sci fi movie.
you think there was a ton of coverage...uhm..no way
it would have scared the bejebus out of too many people.
