How do you...

.....making sure the water temperature is kept within normal range of course......

if the ambient temp is going to be bad for the water temp, just set the bucket in the tank. remember to be aware of water displacement... EUREKA!

I have one of those clip on the side boxes. I put the fish in, and clip into the darkened tank to adjust temp. Then I dump out about a third of the original water and add tank water. I watch the fish carefully at this point, if after 5 min they seem fine I do another 30% wc with water from the tank. I repeat this another time and by then there is very little original water left. Then I let them swim out of the box into the tank.

What do you call the box or where do you get one?

Thanks, now I know what to look for. I am going to start using this method. Question though, how do you start the drip? Is it like siphoning gas?

I found a breeder box at pets Mart that doubles as a aclimation box. It comes with everything needed for 15 bucks.
