how many black skirts for 20 gallon

I will admit that I err on the side of caution when it comes to stocking tanks. No two tanks are going to be alike and I would much rather see some empty space for fish to swim in than one crammed pack like sardines...maybe that is a matter of personal opinion then...but I still stand by my statements.

Fair enough, jpappy - I respect that view.

Thanks for the replies. I want to keep with the black skirts because of was given 3 and I don't have any place to take them. I am just keep it a species tank for now with some ghost shrimp. I will will probably get 6-8 and leave the tank at that. I have kept several bettas before but this is my first "larger tank" I will keep a track my levels. I will post and let you all know how it turn out. Thanks a lot.

Tetras are great fish, for the most part. I have two 20 high tanks with two different schools in each. Since some prefer the top area and others the bottom, it fills the tanks out nicely. I don't know about black skirts, but one of my tanks has black phantoms (bottom half) and black neons (top half). I just added the phantoms last night, since the bottom was being wasted except for one Bolivian Ram. Since adding them, the tank has come alive. The ram no longer hides and even the black neons are venturing down towards the middle.

In my other 20 high I have 8 serpaes, 5 redeyes, 1 leftover glowlight, 1 Bolivian Ram, 1 ghost shrimp and 1 BN pleco. The serpaes are wonderful, zipping all over the tank. The red eyes, well, they're kinda weird. The pleco hides whenever I come around and makes it necessary to clean & water change twice weekly. I swear that fish alone has more 'bioload' than both schools together!

Careful what you say when you choose to criticize:

"Severely overstocked & lead to all kinds of other problems" ??
On what basis and on what grounds would you make a statement like that ?
What kind of 'other problems' specifically are you talking about, and have you ever tried it ? How do you come by that experience and knowledge ?
The fact that it is a 20 gal tall, rather than a long, has really very little bearing on it .
I've been fish-keeping for over 50 years, both fresh and saltwater, have kept and bred a number of species of tetras, and I'm sure that up to 12 mature Black Skirts could be successfully kept in a 20 gal under properly maintained tank conditions.

Haven't you read a thread here before? Every fish needs at least 10 gallons regardless of species, 50-100 for goldfish, 125 for each oscar. Otherwise evil ammonia will kill your fish.

But I agree, load it up. I have plenty of these guys and they seem to add about zero to bioload even though some look like they are record breaking whoppers in size.

A dozen, sure. Maybe many more if you clean tank regularly.

Great post. - First good laugh I've had in a couple of days over this thread.
