How many corys and clown loaches?

I keep 4 Yoyo loaches in my 55g with a large group of cories (maybe 12-14?)....with no problems. :rolleyes: I have never had a problem and all my cories have lived peacefully with the loaches for a long time. Everyone gets their share of food and the loaches mainly play amongst themselves.

If you like the Yoyos and can find them at a decent price, get them. I've met many people on fish sites that keep them with cories and have no problems. Your mileage may vary though i guess....

aparker: The picture you posted is of an Angelicus loach, Botia kubotai, as seen on this site: http://www.loaches.com/species-index/botia-kubotai. (aka Polka Dot loaches) These guys have lots of names...

Look around at other LFS if you can find others in your area that you haven't visited. Maybe you'll find them for a lower price. Also look around online for them.

Aquabid doesn't have Botia kubotai right now, but there are some Zebra loaches (Botia striata), 5 for $55 with free shipping (so $10 each ;))....that is a good price to me, if you like them. The angelicus loaches at Petsmart looked nothing like that? They looked more like Zebra loaches. Maybe it was because they were so small though? If I get loaches, I wanna stick with clowns or Angelicus. As the Angelicus get older, will they have more polka dots and deeper color? I am starting to halfway like their color patterns more than the clowns. Will Angelicus school together as well like clowns? Ill try to look online for some lower prices.

However, if I decide to NOT get any loaches, I'll be wanting some more cory's. I really would like to get some Sterbais, Pandas, or Bronze. I have 3 Schwartzi and 5 Peppers now, so what kind of and how many do you think I should get to go in my new 75g?
 
Is 21 bucks a piece for the Angelicus loach(polka dot) a little overpriced? Some people told me it was and they have seen them at most petsmarts for 9.99. Is there any way to get my petsmart to come off of that price or am I just stuck with 21.99 unless I order online?
 
$21 each sounds like alot to me. I don't think you'll be able to get them down either.

As for the cories, I'd go with atleast 6 each of the types you want. Bring your current groups up to 6 and then you could add 2 other groups of 6 IMO. If you skip the loaches, you'll have more room for cories. ;) IMO 24 cories would be a nice number for a 75g.

http://www.liveaquaria.com sells Angelicus loaches for $13.99, but then you'd have to add shipping, so it might even out to $21 by then. :) I'm not sure how much their shipping is.

K, so if I decide not to get the loaches and get just the corys, here's what I was thinking:

Have 5 peppers, so get 1 to make it 6
Have 3 Schwartzi, so get 3 to make that 6

I would really like some sterbai's, but I can't find them around here

Now it's between Pandas and Bronze's, not sure which to get?

yes, the can get to be 12 inches long.

but the chances of this happening in your aquarium are incredibly remote.

clowns are very difficult to grow up big in captivity. In 15 years in the hobby (and 8 working at a large LFS with 180 tanks) I have only seen 3 clown loaches over 8 inches long. And they were all wild caught that size.

I have seen literally hundreds and hundreds that are less than 4 inches. And lots of these guys were older fish too.

I have 4 that are 10 years old in a 65, and, yes, they are about 3 to 4 inches long, but nowhere near 10 or 12 inches.

the reality is that clowns are one of the most popular fish out there, and almost none of these fish are growing up to be huge in captivity. Local fish stores would be getting flooded with calls looking for homes for all these big loaches if it were that easy, but its not.

sure, they grow very slowly. But thats not the whole story.

It is very rare to grow them up to be big too.

I am not going to start a war here, its just that I think that it is not a problem to put a few clowns in a 4 foot tank, especially if you really like clowns and are spending hundreds of dollars on a set up:shark: .

Thanks for that read! I feel the same way as well. I have never seen a lot of these fish getting THAT big unless someone had a huge tank. Lots of people says it stunts their growth and all, but my fish have always lived long lives.

12 Volt, since I'm now getting a 60 gallon tank, should I keep 8 corys and 4 clown loaches, or would 5 loaches be a good number? Keep in mind I'll have guppies, mollys, platys, and 4 angelfish as well
