How many corys and clown loaches?

yeah i cant really mentally see a clown loach being 4 inches as a fully grown fish for its whole life and not be stunted. My lfs sells them at 6 inches, they are all at 6 inches and they have a school of 6 that are 6 inches.

Would 2 clowns and 2 angelicus loaches be a bad idea as well? Would that still be too much, and would it not be a big enough school? I may end up just sticking with cories, but I LOVE both fishes and want both :(

your LFS has a school of 6 inch clowns?

holy smokes.

up here in ontario, even at the really big stores near toronto with 150+ tanks (the aquarium services chain), clowns loaches this size are almost never seen.

where I worked (at one of these big stores) they sold for $200 canadian for an 8 incher. and that was just one. (a customer trade in).

we would get stock lists from a lot of big international suppliers (Dolphin International etc) and big loaches were seldom available for import. I imagine its because the box charges, frieght charges, and then exhange rate, and mark up for profit would make ordering a school of loaches this size impractical for a business. They would be super expensive just to cover the costs to get them here and then mark up for profit.

how much are the 6 inch ones?

if they are a good price, and your tank is big enough, grab some!

You might be able to get a great deal!

loaches ideally should be kept in groups of 4 to 6, but there is no law that says you can't put two of one species instead of 4 of one species.

lots of people buy two clowns and they do fine.

if you decide to go 2 angelicus and 2 clowns, just be aware that they will stick with each other, but not all together.

just don't ever buy just one loach. the do enjoy their own company.

I don't get it why you are keep ignoring me? Cories and Clowns do not mix well and should never be ketp together.

I think someone needs to read up on the proper care of clown loaches. http://www.loaches.com/species-index/clown-loach-chromobotia-macracanthus

Just because you don't see clown loaches bigger than 4 inches it doesn't mean it's the norm. Clown Loaches can easily reach 4 inches in a year or two and they will definetly out grow a small tank like a 55 gal. Clown loaches should ALWAYS be in large group of 5 or more. The same goes for other loaches really. If you can't provide them a proper home now or in the near future DON'T BUY them.

I guess I agree to disagree.

what you read about in books is not always the reality of the situation. Heck, our own species profile on clowns specifically mentions how rare it is the grow them up huge.

real life experience counts too.

I don't want to start a war, so I will leave it at that.

this hobby is supposed to be fun.

I sold hundreds of clowns to 4 foot tanks over the years, and I never had one single one come back outgrown.

that doesn't mean that all these fish are all sick, unhealthy, unhappy and dying.

sorry, but thats just the reality of the situation.

yes, there is a small chance that the loaches will one day get massive down the road. But this is not the norm.

If it were, we would have been getting calls all the time looking for new homes for all these giant loaches, instead of all the calls for oscars, barbs, plecos, pacus, balas and all the other fish that are easy to grow and outgrow their tanks like we were.

We always advised people of the size of these fish can get, but often times, the customer wants the fish anyway. And with the above fish, it is certainly a problem.

But based on years of experience, I just think that chances are, as far as the clown loaches go, it won't turn into the nightmare you think it wil.

I would however, love to see some pics of all these giant loaches out there.

This is rediculus. Most of you blowing things way out of proportion here. I understand that you all want the exact best for the fish. But come on no mater how big of a tank you put a fish in it will never be as good as if it were living in its natural habitat. I have kept clown loaches with 1" albino loches for over two years and they get along great and even schole and play together. So in my opinion, get the loaches and the cories that you want and enjoy them. Even if they get stunted, as long you do the best you can to take good care of them they will still live long healthy lives. If you start to feel that what you are doing is not adaquit for the fishs helth them give them to someone else who can or to the lfs no big deal.
