How many fish can live in my tank?

I have a 55gal. octagon tall tank and I already have a feeder comet (who I hadn't expected to live) and then my sick Ryukin who now after a bad bout of being over fed by my poor fish while I was away. I don't think my Ryukin is going to make it another few days, he tries to swim to the bottom but only gets about half way before he floats back up.

But my question is how many fish can I put in my tank? I generally like big fish like the Ryukin and other fancy goldfish, the area I live in though only sell really small Orandas and Ryukin along with the Calico.
 
a regular 55 (4 ft long) has room for about 4 fancies. an octagon isn't really long enough for a comet though.
 
I had gotten him to cycle my tank since he was in the feeder tanks, but then my neighbor came over and told me I had a comet. I have been planning a pond because I would like some koi but I think my comet will outgrow the tank before then.
 
so you first question was how many fish can you fit. You seem to like goldies but I have to say I think they're a poor choice for a hex. Those kinda of tanks are hard because most fish like to swim horizontally more than vertically. I would say 1 big angel would look great in it, then a school of like 8-10 tetras. Something medium...not so small to get eaten and not so big that the tank feels cramped to them. Then have fun on the bottom with a pair of rams or something like that. a small group of cories would work too.
 
I should have probably put in that in October I plan to get a larger tank (since the octagon tank isn't mine, I needed it in a emergency when my tank broke, so I have to return it) I wanted to get either another 55 gal. tank or possibly a 75 gal.

So I would change the thread to that but I can't >.<
