I have a 56 gallon tank. I've added Bio-spira but apparently not enough as nothing has happened yet.

Once the levels are set I'm going to get a pleco and some goldfish. How many goldfish do you think I can keep in here?

Are there any other fish that go well with goldfish?

No pleco, not only are they tropical fish, but they grow to two feet in length - either that or they get stunted, wich is very painfull for the fish.

Maybe three fancy goldfish, or two comets, and that would be pushing it.

A paradise fish would probably be OK, although I'm not sure about keeping them with fancys, white clouds and mosquito fish could possibly kept witht them as well, although I'm pretty sure mosquito fish are nippy and would be a NO with fancys.

You need to add some ammonia to make sure the bio-spira has done it's job.

i couldnt agree more.

as with the paradise fish, they were first imported into the trade to be coldwater fish, as an alternative to goldfish, but they do much better in a tropical tank. they are more active and have much better colors, so i would stick with a tropical tank for them.
i wouldnt go with misquito fish with facys for the smae reasons that dorkfish mentioned, but the white clouds would work, just make sure that they are getting some tropical foods in their diet, not just goldfish food.

What are you basing your determination of "nothing has happened"on? Current ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings?

Any special reason for not adding fish when you put the Bio Spira in?

If only someone could think of a way to create a car that would run on the massive amonts of ammonia that goldfish apparently produce... 3 fancies in a 56g?? I at one time kept two in a 29g and never had a single problem.

This is at the recomendation of someone whos expertise I trust much more than yours. According to roan art (a member who ceased posting here a while back), two fancies in a 29 can be done, whowever, even the littlest thing like an un-noticed dead snail can send the ammonia and nitrite readings through the roof, it really is pushing it. Also, do you have any idea how big goldies get? They do not simply "grow to the tank" (not saying you said/think that), unless the fish is being stunted (wich happens all to often), they can reach an adult size of well over 6 inches and that's minimalistic, even larger is not unheard of.

jm1212, I haven't read much on paradise fish, and what I did read was outdated (and said they were infact coldwater fish), so thanks for the bit of info.

Alright, if you take a goldfish that was previously in a 75g tank and introduce it into a 2,000g pond, it will grow larger; so why don't we make a law that says that no-one can puchase goldfish anymore, because no matter what size tank that they are to be put in, they will be stunted.

I have 2 goldfish in there currently and my levels have been going nowhere. We previously medicated the tank because one of them was sick. No meds should be in the system anymore though because we have the carbon filter back in there for over a week now and we did a 50% water change.

The Bio-Spira was put in mid-week last week and nothing has happened. I put more in last night and still no changes in levels.

ammonia .5
ph 7.0 - 7.1
nitrite 0
nitrate 0

We used Bio-spira on the saltwater tank and that tank showed instant results - although I think that's based on the live rock.

Any ideas why this isn't going anywhere? I think my tank just hates me.
